World Mind Sports Games

Many have been wondering if we are going to broadcast from the 1st World Mind Sports Games in Beijing (October 3-18). Today I received an e-mail from Song Zhao, our contact in the CCBA, and he was able to forward a BBO schedule he has received from the WBF.

As usual, we will list the event on our vugraph schedule web page as soon as possible, but I can give you a summary here:

17 rounds of round-robin, 16 boards per match.

4 segments of 14 boards in the Round of 16.

6 segments of 16 boards in the quarter-finals.

6 segments of 16 boards in the semi-finals.

6 segments of 16 boards in the finals.

At this point we don't know how many tables we will have up per session. As is always the case, it will depend on how many operators the organisers can get.

Will the broadcasts be exclusively from the open? Will there be any broadcasts from any other categories, ie. Women, Seniors, Mixed, U28, U26, U21?

No info yet, but I will be surprised if we don't get a little of everything. The more operators they can recruit, the greater the chance of showing matches from many series.

All I know at this stage is that the schedule we will have up shortly is the one that applies to the open, women and seniors series. No details regarding the other competitions.

Hi all ,

I will be in charge of onsite and BBO vugraph during World Minds Game

We plan to broadcast 4 Matches in each round in Beijing. (main match + 3 others)

As usual , I will be sure of this only when I will on site (September 30th).

As Roland noticed , operators' problem is the key for broadcasting , but if chineses people who are in charge of finding operators are like in Sanghai , i'm not worry at all ;)

I will keep you in touch as soon as I got more news for BBO Vugraph in Beijing.

No . choice of broadcasted matches are responsability of "officials members" of WBF, but I can interfere or make some proposition to them according to Roland.

Main match is allways a top one - 3 others are free of charge for teams which will be broadcast

All operators (6 chineses people & 2 french people) are paid by WBF for theses matches.

In the other hand , if a team (Italy did it in the past) want to pay operators to be broadcast every round , there's no problem about it but they have to provide (or find) their own operators

Of course , and for security reasons , we can't display as many as matches we can , because each broadcast need an individual box for it.

Australia decided to bring four young players to Beijing as Staff/Recorders.

Then we found out that Recorders are not required in the Round Robin, ref:

http://www.ecatsbridge.com/Events/wbf/2008...ing/scorers.asp.

I think Ron Klinger and other journalists still want some of our matches

recorded by these young Aussies, but after we are knocked out (and

perhaps earlier if there is an emergency shortage of BBO operators),

these four people, all of whom are experienced BBO operators,

will almost certainly be available to operate for BBO if needed.

If anyone in Beijing wants to follow up on this possibility,

my email is petergill909@gmail.com.

Will there be any coverage of the Individual events (Open and Women)?

Sorry no. Our broadcast will not start until Saturday morning local time. Again it's a question of recruiting operators. We have them for the team events, but they need to practice first to ensure a quality presentation.

I now have our matches for the first three rounds (Saturday local time). Open series unless stated.

Round 1:

Hungary v China

Australia v England

Norway v Egypt

Israel v Netherlands

Round 2:

Canada v Italy

France v Brazil

Iceland v Poland

Denmark v South Africa

Round 3:

Poland v Egypt

China v Russia

Romania v Japan

England v USA (seniors)

In each round we will add one youth match. We can't tell you which, and we may only broadcast from one room. The problem with the youth events as far as vugraph is concerned is that the youngsters play at another venue across the city, so our operators are left to their own devices.

Therefore, please understand if we can't offer a comprehensive and flawless youth broadcast in the beginning.

The Individual is in 2 parts with the second part on Oct 9th, so perhaps coverage of the second part is possible.

Oct 9th is the only day off for the teams .... and most importantly: our operators. My guess is that we won't broadcast, but I'll check with Hervé (Zmud99). Perhaps it's not even our call. It could well be that the WBF won't let us broadcast from that event.

According to the first bulletin http://www.worldbridge.org/bulletin/08_2%2...WMSG/bul_01.pdf some of the matches (Italy-Finland especially on my mind) will be broadcasted on OurGames. Can anybody tell where this OurGames can be found? Google didn't find anything. Sorry about that this probably isn't related to BBO!

Ourgames is a Chinese bridge site and everything is in Chinese. I am sorry to say that I don't know how to get there. I suggest that you send a private message to cnszsun (yellow) when you see him online. He should be able to give you a link.

Day 1 was pretty good in my opinion. There will always be a few minor problems in the beginning, such as inexperienced operators, wrong team names, misspelling of player names, etc. In those areas I am convinced that Hervé will make sure that we deliver a better presentation very soon.

Unfortunately we had no matches from the youth events as promised, and the organizers did not manage to provide running scores and results. Also problems one can face when such a big event gets under way. I am sure it will be much better come Saturday/Sunday.

When the weekend is complete we will have offered commentary in English, French, Italian, Spanish, Turkish, Indonesian, Japanese and Chinese. Later we will most likely be able to add German, Polish, Danish, Swedish and Norwegian.

Our Monday program from Beijing is as follows (Open series unless stated):

Round 7:

China v Netherlands

Austria v Germany

Russia v Sweden

Germany v Netherlands (women)

Round 8:

Italy v Romania

New Zealand v Norway

Bulgaria v Poland

Denmark v France

Round 9:

Italy v Brazil

Turkey v England

Lebanon v Germany

France v Pakistan

Sunday we managed to show a match from the U28 event in the last two rounds. Hopefully we will be able to carry on with a youth match tomorrow. Which (if any) we can't tell in advance.
