kenrexford
I bid 1NT all the time with this type of hand. 1♦ seems like the standard bid, though.
mike777
I bid 1NT all the time with this type of hand. 1♦ seems like the standard bid, though. ohhh I bid one spade...thought wtp.
rbforster
and here i was thinking 1♥, wtp? I'm bidding 1♦ since I think LHO is going to declare hearts and I want the lead. My spades aren't so good I feel like mentioning them with my one bid and they'll break badly even if we do have a fit.
the hog
1D. Don't see the problem.
skjaeran
1♥ - transfer.
P_Marlowe
1D, switch the suit quality, and we may start talking about 1S, as it is, you have FIVE diamonds, headed by KQ vs. FOURspades headed by J10, so ... With kind regardsMarlowe
helene_t
I think I would bid 1♦ after the double even if playing Walsh. In SAYC you are supposed to bid longer diamonds before spades so in SAYC 1♦ is 100% obvious.
ochinko
1♦ non-forcing, showing 5, even though I play MAFIA (major always first in answering), and my bid would be 1♠ without the double. Btw, I play weak jump shifts, but they show a 6 cards suit.
helene_t
oh btw, 1♦ is forcing.
ochinko
oh btw, 1♦ is forcing. Wasn't sure about that and about the question - what is standard, or what is best. If 1♦ is forcing I prefer to pass here :)
dicklont
1♦, the normal bid. But I'm tempted to psych 1♥ and when I'm convinced that the opponents are in some sort of partnershiptrouble (arguing and disagreeing about previous hands) I would try it. the hog
1♥ - transfer. :) To Ds? A one under transfer?? :o
655321
1♠ for me.
Gerben42
1♠, followed by 2♦ if opponents run to 2♣.

skjaeran
1♥ - transfer. :) To Ds? A one under transfer?? :o LOL, nope.1♥ shows ♠'s. And I can bail out in 2♦ later over 1NT from partner (xy-NT is on for us) - not over 2♣ though.
jtfanclub
1♦, because that's the lead I want, and it's by far my best suit. SAYC, 2/1, Walsh, whatever. 1 round forcing, not forcing, don't care. It seems like half the time this happens my partner has 1 spade and 4 hearts, and they end up sinking in a major. Weird how that happens. One thing to point out is, if my opps had (WARNING, sample hand ahead!) AxxAJxxxAJxxx They would bid 1♥, not X. It is my understanding that at levels higher than I play at, this is an X. So maybe that's why some of the better players are bidding a spade here. han
That's a 1H bid at higher levels as well.
skjaeran
That's a 1H bid at higher levels as well. Yes, even more so at higher levels.
mike777
I strongly disagree with bidding one D for the lead if you agree to play Walsh. If you want to play a system/style for the lead fair enough but if you agree to play Walsh play it. :) This spade suit is just fine to bid under Walsh. 1c=(x)=1d=p1s=p=2s now shows a huge hand if you play game force style Walsh which I do. :)You do not need to start with xx with all game force hands. This can really cause problems. Also if you play Walsh and have nongame force hands you can lose the spade suit. :)
jtfanclub
That's a 1H bid at higher levels as well. Yes, even more so at higher levels. My apologies to you, Han, and everyone else. I was misinformed.
pclayton
I normally like spades first with this strength, but I want a diamond lead so bad. If LHO bids 1♥, pard can bid 1♠. If LHO bids 2♥, then I can make a TOx with these clubs. If I were 4351, I think this is tougher.
andy_h
Depends what responding style you play. Playing walsh, I will bid 1S.
jdeegan
:) Thx for the opinions. imho 'Walsh', the treatment, is so much do doux - although the Walsh's are both fine players. If you have one bid in the hand, you bid the major. With more, say 10+HCP or some shape, you bid one ♦. I ended up bidding one♠, but the idea that I wanted a ♦ lead was soooooooo... tempting that, thanks to the panel, I will bid one ♦ next time. Godspeed.
