North has shown at least 65 in C & S but it is South who knows he holds a double fit.

The only issue is whether with such a good hand North should double 5H : do the right thing partner...

I would guess as South to take out insurance with 5S...but there again I would roll the dice with a double as North to confirm my strength (and As as compared with say 66 headed by KQTs and certainly would have bid the same way ue 3C & 4S with KQJTx void xx KQJxxx).

regards

Eventhough north already showed a hand with playing strength with his jump to 4, I think the hand is so good that you should double 5 to show real power.

Anyway, south should bid 5 over 5 with a known double fit and no defence, whether or not north doubled.

Disagree with the crowd, it's double dummy to say south should raise. North should double 5, and then it's reasonable for south to pull. I think raising directly is too likely to trade a plus for a minus, and the danger of losing control before clubs set up is HUGE from south's perspective so it could be a large minus.

I like jdonn's suggestion best but then again i was sitting south and didn't bid 5.

I had the hand slightly wrong - north didn't have the 10. I wrote the hand up at work without reference to the hand record. Maybe I also the dealer wrong.

I was playing with my regular partner so I know her style reasonably well. However we had never had an auction like this before over a strong 2 so I couldn't be sure how many tricks she might have to bid this way.

Here is the complete hand:

[hv=d=s&v=n&n=sakq53hd93caqj764&w=sthakjt86dakj74ck&e=s9764h952dq65ct92&s=sj82hq743dt82c853]399|300|Scoring: IMP

Pass (2) 3 (Pass)

Pass (3) 4 (Pass)

Pass (5) Pass (5)

Pass (Pass) Pass[/hv]

Not real sure how to respond to the poll... I don't think south made an error. I think north should absolutely have doubled. What if north was just dickering around trying to push them to 5? Without encouragement... there are 2 big ways that south jumping in could be wrong.

Now once north makes the obvious double, south has the obvious pull. Also, if south has shortness in both black suits, 5 is likely toast so multiple ways to win for the double.
