How is the field selected

Recommended Posts

Our servers maintains 16 pools of duplicate deals, one pool for each vulnerability/dealer combination. It is actually a little more complicated than that because, for example, there are separate sets of 16 pools for tables in which GIBs are playing.

When a given table needs a new bridge deal, the server will search the appropriate pool for a deal that none of the players has seen before. If no such deal exists then it will generate a new one. If more than one such deal exists your table will be given the deal that has been played the most times already. When a given deal is played 16 times it is retired (ie nobody else will be able to play it).

Given the large number of tables that share the same 16 pools, which specific 15 other tables end up playing any given deal that you play can be considered more or less a random thing.

Is there a good reason for 16 and not 12 or 25 or 32 or whatever? I imagine the more times the board is played the more accurate the results should be, but I guess the downside is it might take a longer time for it to be played the full time and give you the close to real time results. I guess I'm asking is there a theoretical reason why 16 is the right number, or is it just empirically about right?

I don't know why 16 is the chosen power of 2, rather than 32 or 64. :(

16 results fit nicely in the Movie window without the need for a scrollbar :(

Actually I think there is a better reason than that, but it was a decision I made a long time ago and I honestly can't remember the rationale.

thank you Fred...

I think it's just like in real life you just have to live with the bad field :(

I was thinking in a way to have different pools for avg of skill level of the players at the table, but think it will not realy change nothing, since the skill level may be a bit forged also :)

And a way to mark the bogus claims and things like that will not benefit that much the players that are playing that particular set.
