Negative double could be a hand with no convenient rebid (ie 4-3-3-3 or 4-3-4-2 with one major and good points), a weak hand with a long major, or both majors.

What call do you think is right?

Certainly partner and I already knew what I would do on this expectable auction. So I do that agreed bid/pass. Assuming 13 bal scattered honors is outside 1NT opener, what did your partnership decide to do here? I fear 2H finds H3-4 misses S3-5. Clubs on my left, maybe C-stop. I try 2NT hoping partner can/will show 5cM/even good 4cM fearing 3NT.

So over 2NT by you, partner will bid a four card major, fearing you don't have a 2NT bid? I stand corrected in everything I've ever thought!

I'm surprised there are more votes for 2 than 2. Isn't that the bid that's a catch-all for hands that don't have any other convenient bid ? Either partner has tolerance for Diamonds or a longer major which he can bid at the 2-level. The only time 2 creates a problem worse than other bids is when partner has 4-4-2-3 or 4-4-1-4 with really poor clubs.

Why does he need poor clubs, he could just be not good enough to bid on. And isn't this a HUGE problem?

This.

Also you are dreaming if you think partner is bidding 2M over 2D with (54)22.

2 isn't a catch-all for me; it's a natural bid showing long diamonds. I'm a 2 bidder here.

Actually, the situation never came up. I had this hand and it went 1-(2)-All pass.

Partner's other option was a negative double, over which I would have had this problem. I would have bid 2, I think, but I wanted the opinions of other who had been in this situation before (since I'm sure it's not rare).

2nt over 2 would be NF, so with decent clubs he might do that or might have passed originally intending to pass partner's double with length in clubs. 2M over 2 is also NF, so I don't understand the problem in doing that if you recognize that partner might have had to bid that over your double.

The main argument for 2nt is, that it very often gets you to the right game. That is, at least if you do not play anything fancy.

If the system-constructor is alive to the danger of these troublesome hands, and have made a device that checks if 2 was a three-card suit, the bid gains a lot. At least in my opinion.

I used to bid 2NT, but I got sick of everyone I know who is good telling me how much it means I suck. So 2 it is!

Nope, I still bid 2NT on these hands.
