What do you bid after P has shown no support for S and shortage in H? Gerben47
This auction shows "no 4 hearts, no 3 spades". The most likely distributions are:2-3-4-42-3-5-3 If he really has 2-2-5-4, the 1NT bid should contain a stopper in ♥. Conclusion: I would not worry too much about the lack of hearts and bid 3NT. Flame
In general when u have a strong hand, stronger then minimum GF and the scoring is IMP , its a good idea to check for stopers because uncase you dont have the necasary stopers a trump game can be made even without a fit due to the extra streagh (or 5 minor with a fit) this hand is strong however it contain 3 small hearts, and partner rates to have 3 of his own, those 3 against 3 will not be any good in suit contract and therfore 3nt is the best and should be bid now. (without asking or showing stopers) if hearts were shorter then it was right to continue bidding stopers.
jillybean
Thanks for the replies. If we did continue bidding, the bid would be 3H to ask for H stopper?Opener then bids 3NT with H stopper and 3S without? TYIA
luis
4s, my spades are good and will play ok in front of a doubleton and I think I have the strength needed to backup a 5-2 fit at the 4 level.Even if pd has a heart stopper I have my doubts about 3NT, pd can have something likeQx, Kxx, Kxxx, KQxx and after a heart lead if hearts are 5-2 we have a lot of problems.Even with Axx, QJx, or KJx in hearts 3NT can go down.I think 4s makes more often than 3NT in this context. Flame
The way to check stopers is up to you and your partner to agree on but i think the normal method is to show and not to ask. About what luis said, i think 3nt chances is better (even with luis's examples) yet luis is good enough player for me to have doubts about it now. mishovnbg
---------------------------------------------Hi Kathryn! ------ The decision depend of your partnership agreements. Main principle is if you have enough strength to investigate best contract if it is possible. So if some of your bids above 3NT are forcing, then it is right time to use it with your hand. If say 3♦ is forcing, this is most right bid you can ever do. If not, then 3♥ is forcing probably, and you can receive additional info need to choose contract. What is the meaning of bids depend of partnership agreements - that is why bridge is partnership game, unlike chess for example, but you will still can receive 3♠ or 3NT for example to make final decision about right contract. ------------------------------------------------------ Misho
Free
3NT, but if you really want to expose partner's hand (he's also the one that plays, so don't give opps too much info) bid 3♣ or 3♦...
