Do you feel compelled to act now? Paul
655321
Yes, double for me. Other options are 4♠ or 5♣ (hoping partner is not 4333 or similar!), or to have raised clubs last round. When partner opened 1♣ we had a suspicion that the opponents had at least 9 spades between them, and it is not unexpected that they have discovered their spade fit. jdonn
Opponents bidding and raising my void is an unexpected twist? I bid 4♣ now which my partner should understand includes a penalty pass of diamonds. Sorry if you are 4333 :)

jtfanclub
Is the penalty pass of 1♦ the preferred choice among you guys?
jdonn
Is the penalty pass of 1♦ the preferred choice among you guys? Yes, it gave me the opportunity to describe my hand almost perfectly on the given auction (which is of course not a guarantee that it will work out well). Long good diamonds, club support, short spades, about this much strength. BTW didn't think through my answer before, but partner has two diamonds at most of course, so I guess 4423 is really the only shape to worry about since 4333 is not possible, and far more likely he has 4+ clubs. paulg
Unsurprisingly partner has a minimum 4414 hand and 4♣ is a lot better than double, especially as they have 9 tricks. Paul
jtfanclub
Is the penalty pass of 1♦ the preferred choice among you guys? Why what are you advocating? 1N? 2D? 3S? It would be 2♦ (LR of clubs or GF), but I'm not advocating it. Just wondering if if the pass was standard here.
gipsona
Perhaps its worth mentioning that 1♣ could be on a doubleton in a weak no trump (11-13) hand. Is 4♣ still so attractive - i thought my options at the table were really between double and pass.

Is 4♣ still so attractive - i thought my options at the table were really between double and pass. It's most unlikely to be a weak doubleton now. If the 1♦ overcall was on a five-card suit, partner has at most two diamonds, and therefore at least three clubs.

gnasher
X Penalty of Diamonds, takeout of spades. You must have nerves of steel. I'm not sure that I'd survive the pause whilst partner thought about whether to leave it in.

No really, I have it as a specific system note, that passing an overcall and the doubling a new suit has this meaning. It occurs so infrequently, that I cannot say if it is good or bad. I simply adopted it from Robson & Seagal.
