Guest Jlall
imps w/w you hold Kx ATxxx xxxx xx 1D on your left, 1S by pard, pass, you pass, 2C on left, p p 2H by you p 3H by pard p ? Undiscussed whether 2H over 1S is NF or F. Q1) Do you bid game or pass? How close is it?Q2) Do you agree with your previous bidding?
dicklont
A1. I bid game, my partner invited me to do so. My two honours must be very welcome to him.I would like a to have singleton club though. A2. I really like the previous bidding. The hand is not good enough for immediate action, but it got a second chance.I suppose partner holds a good hand, but not good enough to start with double and then bid spades. jillybean
Close but I pass, my pard didn't have a stronger bid than 1♠ over the opening. The auction so far is fine.
grrigg
I pass. Its close because we are pretty close to maximum given the bidding so far; 2 very well placed honors and partner cant expect given that we didnt bid 2H originally. However, if partner had 4 hearts and a pretty good hand why didnt he bid 2H himself over 2C? I dont think that would have to show 5-5 (am I wrong?) If partner doesnt have 4 hearts then I just have trouble seeing us get 10 tricks given the minor suit situation and the likely bad major suit breaks. kenrexford
Game. Not close. OK with previous bidding. Partner's lack of any other call as a game try convinces me.
655321
1) 4♥. I am not actually sure how strong partner is (he would pass 2♣ with some decent 5413 hands, but he would raise 2♥ to game on some other hands too), or what chances 4♥ has, but I am bidding 4♥ because I don't know that it will be a bad contract. Our few HCP are working. 2) Under the stated conditions, passing 1♠ has to be the sensible thing to do. I like to play 2♥ non-forcing, and I would bid 2♥ with that agreement. Then, it would be easy to decline any invitations, and perhaps easier for partner - with heart support - to decide whether to raise to game or to invite. cjames
I would bid game, and also agree with the previous bidding.
kfay
I raise. Don't think it's that close.
pclayton
I bid game, but I'm also having a difficult time coming up with hands for pard that pass 2♣ and raise to 3♥.
han
I would have doubled 2C. As I would have bid 2H with x KQJxxx in the majors, I think I should do something to keep hearts into play. I picture partner for about the playing strength of AQxxx Kxx xx AQx. With AQxxx Kxxx x Axx I think that partner would have bid game instead of inviting. Given the opposition bidding it is not clear if you want to be in game opposite that first hand, hearts are quite likely to be 1-4. And I made all of partner's points work, is that fair? I guess to pass, I would bid game when red or if I had AJxxx of hearts instead. Pass.
jdonn
Game. Not close. OK with previous bidding. Partner's lack of any other call as a game try convinces me. jtfanclub
Game. Not close. OK with previous bidding. Partner's lack of any other call as a game try convinces me. I just know I'm going to regret this...but what do you mean by this comment? I believe he means that both 3♣ and 3♦ would be cue bids in support of hearts, and that he feels that 3♥ says that he doesn't need help in the minors. Since all of our points are in the majors, what we have must be what he's looking for.
skjaeran
Easy raise to game. Not close at all IMO. Playing transfer advances, I'd have bid 2♦ over 1♠. Without that treatment, I just might have tried 1NT, but pass is OK.
CSGibson
I bid game. Partner has extra values, but didn't reopen with a double, making me think he has short diamonds along with his heart and spade values. Partner's values are also all behind the opening bidder, and I do believe they pay extra for a game bonus. As for the bidding, I approve of it (given the agreements stated), which probably means that it's flawed. Sorry.
benlessard
I dont understand 2H when X is available. This is the textbook hand to X. Valuestol for spades5 in the unbid suit. Once i bid 2H wich is the bid i would have made with 6H to the Q and nothing else i have so much extras that stopping short of game is inconceivable. y66
I think pard will have something like Han proposes, say, AQxxx Kxx xx AQx and that we belong in game.
mikeh
I pass, but it is close. It is not a crime to miss a nv game unless it is better than 50%. I wouldn't need much here at all: make the heart 10 the J and I'd bid it. I'd bid it anyway if red. Just noted that my answer is identical to Han's...one of us will be disappointed B)
han
Just noted that my answer is identical to Han's...one of us will be disappointed ;) On the contrary Mike. I flew to the Netherlands yesterday (today? I'm not sure) and I really wanted to log on now to see if anybody agreed with me. I'm glad you do! jdonn
I'll simplify. I didn't bid game, Justin thinks I'm nuts, I think partner underbid like my grandma (AQ9xx xxxx Ax Ax), Justin thinks lots of example hands make game, I think pretty much any example hand that makes game was worth a game bid over 2♥. I did win the gentleman's bet though, he thought 100% would bid game hehe. There weren't really example hands put forward for partner shown in this thread, anyone? I could hardly find any that were not decent games opposite, say, xx Axxxxx xx xxx, meaning (to me) that they were game bids over 2♥ (such as AQxxx Kxx xx AQx, how could this not bid game over 2♥, think of what partner is showing! Say opposite xx ATxxxx xxx xx (the opponents can't really have 9 diamonds.))

Would you really be surprised to go down one in 3♥ opposite x QJ9xxx xxx xxx? Anyway, I leave the "game is good except there may well be a 4-1 break" reasoning to the best bidder in the world (and of course notorious underbidders), as LHO could be 2254 or 1255 etc.

kenrexford
Game. Not close. OK with previous bidding. Partner's lack of any other call as a game try convinces me. I just know I'm going to regret this...but what do you mean by this comment? If partner had bid anything but pass or 2♠ over 2♥, it is a game try in hearts. Has to be. Thus, 2NT, 3♣, 3♦, and 3♥ are all GT raises. I would expect minor calls by partner to be shortness bids. I would also expect 2NT, because it allows me to bid a minor at the three-level on route to 3♥, to express interest of some variety in some three-level call. Whether that call should be a shortness call or a feature, I'm not sure. However, I have neither. Because partner picked 3♥, a bid that deprives me of the ability to make a three-level responsive game try back, he must be interested in game without any interest in hearing any sort of minor call. As I have no ability to make a minor call, I have no wasted value outside. Hence, I think my hand fits well with how partner has elected to invite. [EDIT: Just saw that jtfanclub answered for me very well.]
