It goes 4S - X - P to you. If you pass, turn to page 42. If you bid 4N turn to page 23. If you bid 5C turn to page 37.

Partner passes your double, turn to page 42.

Declarer has 10 top tricks but the foul trump split and entry problems means he can only take 9 of them. You survived. +100

Declarer: AQT943 / J9 / 62 / T97 Dummy: 752 / AQT4 / J94 / A84

You made your bed; you might as well be uber-ethical and lie in it. When dummy tracks with KJ86 / 85 / AKQT3 / 65 you wonder why partner didn't bid 5D. Of course you'd NEVER consider pulling that to 5H, would you? Miraculously Clubs were 3-3 and the defense was less than perfect (a panicky mid-hand cash of the Ace of Hearts) and you escaped for -100.

Page 47

Why should I play this mess when I can let partner play it? Pard's left scratching his head when with the World's Fair KJ86 / 85 / AKQT3 / 65 he still ended up -500.

Page 48

What's the problem? They bid game, it went down. I wasn't supposed to bid with this mess, was I? +50 Turn to page 99 if you're curious about the hands.

Page 49

'One time!' you exhort the bridge gods. 'One time!' ... Not this time. KJ86 / 85 / AKQT3 / 65 On a spade lead RHO covers whatever card you play from dummy and you ruff. You manage 2 more spade ruffs in your hand to go along with 2 diamond tricks and 2 club tricks. -800

You see a bright light. ...

RHO AQT943 / J9 / 62 / T97

LHO 752 / AQT4 / J94 / A84

(FWIW I ended up on page 45, rather fortuitously.)

Where are these "10 top tricks" referred to on page 42? If you mean with 5 successful finesses you score 10 tricks, then we have a different definition of "top tricks."

After 2S X 4S, do we X on partner's hand? Is X here penalty, or convertable take-out?

If I knew that X from partner was 2 trump tricks and an AKQ on the side, I would pass, but expecting it to be take-out ish I pulled and went for -500

I have been actually thinking for the last month to make a website where this kind of problems can be made easilly, including card play. It would be wonderful for learning. I've been thinking about the design and I think it is not so hard, perhaps I'll try after transnational if I get some time.
