jonottawa
♠- ♥K7632 ♦875 ♣KQJ32 All white IMPs RHO opens 2♠ Double or no? If you double, turn to page 3. If you pass, turn to page 19. Page 3 It goes 4S - X - P to you. If you pass, turn to page 42. If you bid 4N turn to page 23. If you bid 5C turn to page 37. Page 5 Partner passes your double, turn to page 42. Page 11 LHO doubles 5H. Passed back to you. If you pass, turn to page 49. If you redouble, turn to page 50. Page 17 LHO doubles 5D. Passed back to you. If you pass, turn to page 47. If you bid 5H, turn to page 11. Page 19 It goes 4S - P - P to you. If you pass, turn to page 48. If you double, turn to page 5. If you bid 4N, turn to page 23. If you bid 5 Clubs, turn to page 37. If you do anything else, turn to page 1 of the Club series. Page 23 LHO doubles 4N and partner bids 5D. RHO passes. If you pass, turn to page 17. If you bid 5H, turn to page 11. Page 26 Pard 'looks at' your redouble for a while and then bids 5D. RHO passes. If you pass, turn to page 17. If you bid 5H, turn to page 11. Page 37 LHO's red card 'beats you into the pot' and partner takes a few seconds and then passes. If you pass, turn to page 45. If you redouble, turn to page 26. If you bid 5 Hearts, turn to page 11. Page 42 Declarer has 10 top tricks but the foul trump split and entry problems means he can only take 9 of them. You survived. +100 Declarer: AQT943 / J9 / 62 / T97 Dummy: 752 / AQT4 / J94 / A84 Page 45 You made your bed; you might as well be uber-ethical and lie in it. When dummy tracks with KJ86 / 85 / AKQT3 / 65 you wonder why partner didn't bid 5D. Of course you'd NEVER consider pulling that to 5H, would you? Miraculously Clubs were 3-3 and the defense was less than perfect (a panicky mid-hand cash of the Ace of Hearts) and you escaped for -100. Page 47 Why should I play this mess when I can let partner play it? Pard's left scratching his head when with the World's Fair KJ86 / 85 / AKQT3 / 65 he still ended up -500. Page 48 What's the problem? They bid game, it went down. I wasn't supposed to bid with this mess, was I? +50 Turn to page 99 if you're curious about the hands. Page 49 'One time!' you exhort the bridge gods. 'One time!' ... Not this time. KJ86 / 85 / AKQT3 / 65 On a spade lead RHO covers whatever card you play from dummy and you ruff. You manage 2 more spade ruffs in your hand to go along with 2 diamond tricks and 2 club tricks. -800 Page 50 You see a bright light. ... Page 99 Pard KJ86 / 85 / AKQT3 / 65 RHO AQT943 / J9 / 62 / T97 LHO 752 / AQT4 / J94 / A84 (FWIW I ended up on page 45, rather fortuitously.)http://www.bridgebase.com/myhands/fetchlin...ayed=1218778417

ArtK78
Where are these "10 top tricks" referred to on page 42? If you mean with 5 successful finesses you score 10 tricks, then we have a different definition of "top tricks."
pclayton
I've always wanted to put together a bridge movie on here. If we could hyper-text our way to additional pages maybe... I hope you thanked your LHO for forgetting to count tricks.
iggygork
Although I went for -500 (isn't 4NT auto here once they bounce to 4♠? Guess not.), I ♥ the format. Gorkem
Echognome
Yes. Nice effort put into this. I went for the wimpy +50.

mr1303
After 2S X 4S, do we X on partner's hand? Is X here penalty, or convertable take-out? If I knew that X from partner was 2 trump tricks and an AKQ on the side, I would pass, but expecting it to be take-out ish I pulled and went for -
gwnn
Yes his responsive double is quite bad.
OleBerg
Jumps to 4♣, 5-5 in the soft suits. I'm only -200 I guess. Now partner has the option giving the opponents a speeding-ticket, if they bid 4♠.
kfay
Have to say... greatest problem post ever. Nice one, Jon :(
jonottawa
It WAS inspired by those books many of us read as kids. Certainly not the best hand for it since Pass-Pass is too attractive/boring but thx for the compliments.

chasetb
I saw this in the 'Tricky hand' thread and decided to give it a bump because I think it's pretty cool. FWIW, I would go +50. Mike Lawrence wouldn't bid with this garbage, and so neither did I.

Fluffy
I have been actually thinking for the last month to make a website where this kind of problems can be made easilly, including card play. It would be wonderful for learning. I've been thinking about the design and I think it is not so hard, perhaps I'll try after transnational if I get some time. JLOGIC
Good idea but I thought the execution was poor since passing twice seemed obvious to me
