franklin24
What would you open this hand playing a natural system? [hv=s=sak10842hadkqj92c4]133|100|[/hv] I believe 1♠ is the correct bid but others at the club prefer a GF 2♣ Thanks
P_Marlowe
1S. Given that you have 6 spades and 5 diamonds makes 2C a reasonable option, the higher ranking suit also being the longer, but I wouldopen with 1S. With kind regardsMarlowe
andy_h
Easy 1S for me. I'm not afraid of the auction being passed out because of my 1-1 in the round suits and we play a style (which has become mainstream) of light responses so partner will very likely be responding. Anyway, I'm not that HCP "rich" so opening 2C may still induce preempts and I won't be liking the auction then if it does happen.
jillybean
1♠, hoping to make a ♣ splinter next.
the hog
Very easy 1S. Would not contemplate 2C.

jillybean
1s... opening strong 2 suiters with 2c in bbo forum is forbodden...:) At the table however most open 2♣ :)maybe this is an idiosyncrasy of online play with everyone having bad experiences with pickup partners. jdonn
I disagree with most posters and prefer 2♣. They don't automatically preempt, and your hand is clearly good enough. Axx of diamonds and essentially any hand at all is slam in diamonds. I don't worry a 1♠ opening would get passed out, but I could never show a hand this good after that. jonottawa
If I'm 'playing a natural system' I certainly don't open 2♣ as I only have one of them and would prefer to emphasize one of my longer suits. Otherwise I open 2♣. Ten and a halfish tricks is too much for 1 Spade.
effervesce
Prefer 1♠. Don't like opening two-suiters with 2♣ unless they're VERY strong.
rogerclee
I think the auction will be easier if I open 1♠.
655321
1♠ for me.
kenrexford
This is tough. The two big downsides to opening 1♠ are a risk of a pass-out and the difficulty of playing catch-up later if this turns out to be a marginal-HCP slam auction. The upside is that you place one suit on the table, making you less susceptible to (reasonably likely) intervention. It would surely be best to combine both a forcing opening and showing spades all in one bid with hands like these.
Mbodell
I open 2♣. I don't like opening 1♠ showing a hand that could have 10-20 hcp and 8 ltc through 3 ltc. The range becomes too wide to bid sensibly IMO. I mean this hand has a non-zero chance of making 4♠ opposite a balanced non-fitting yarbrough from partner. Opposite xx xxxx xxx xxxx you could make 4♠ with normal 3-2 splits in ♠ and ♦!

Yes, I think this "weak two" business is just a fad.

SoTired
AK10xxx A KQJxx x - If I only open really strong 2-suiters with 2C, this is the one. 2C for me. There are problems with 1S then 3D (partner may not trust the diam suit initially and will not understand how incredibly strong we are). So 2C ... 2S ... 3D seems the same to me. Switch the diam and spades and I think 1D is best
jdonn
Bah! You don't need all of the weak two's. Exactly! That one in spades is pretty much the most useless of the bunch.

If you play in a country that has sensible regulations you can even have one for both Majors - either 2D Multi or 2H either M if nv.
jdonn
Exactly, why preempt hearts when you have spades, that would be crazy to do.
kenrexford
You can give up 2♦ as weak, I think. Even people who have no use for anything but "weak" for 2♦ come up with silly things instead.
