It just looks like a textbook pass red at imps opposite a passed hand. I can't see the point in bidding.

If you forced me to bid, I'd overcall 1NT.

1N for me would show something slightly better. I am not a convert to double, though I concede that it will often work out. As Frances suggests, pass is possible especially at IMPs, but I'm sure 1 would tempt me at the table.

1 wtp?

I always overcall the major on these kinds of hands so that way I don't have to try to make some judgement call every time one comes up.

1NT is bad, imo. We've barely got 15 and stoppers when we might have 18+ etc.

Obvious double to me, I hate 1N and pass, and just think 1S is inferior to doubling.

I totally agree but I hate 1 too. If partner has four spades double gets you there, if not you probably don't want to play in spades. The risk of a 4-2 diamond fit is really very slight.

1N is simply too rich for me: it is the call most likely to get us going for 800 or more (maybe a lot more)... it is so easy for LHO to double and for both opps to keep doubling. And the upside offered by 1N... an easy route to game opposite a good hand... is probably not there: this type of 15 count needs a lot of help... an average hand with, say, 10 hcp may be way too little, especially if he has Kx or Jxx in hearts as part of the 10 count.

1 is better: but this hand is not suited for a moysian.. I agree with the doublers on the point that double gets us to spades when we have a 4-4 fit...plus, we surely don't want partner competing (preemptively) to the 3-level just because he has some shape and 4 trump.

Pass: probably the best call. It avoids any numbers, and may lead to a small plus on defence. But it risks losing a lot of 5-6 imp swings.

Double is what is left.... I would be less inclined to double with 4=3=4=2, since there is a real risk of a 4-2 club fit, but there is less risk (not 'no risk') of that happening in diamonds, because with 4=4 in the minors, he may choose 2. OTOH, with 4=4 in the minors, he may choose 2 to allow himself a 3 call if I cuebid.

All told, I vote for pass at imps, with double a close second. 1 is my distant 3rd choice and I really dislke 1N.

Im really surprised at all the differents answers here.

I really think that the 2 most dangerous call are

1-pass (chance of missing game is real) and chance of missing swing partscore.

2- 1Nt just too much chance to reach terrible Nt contract.

I think both 1S and X are quite safe unless partner compete further. However i dont really see any point in X instead of 1S. If partner compete further i much prefer him to bid 2S/3S over 2H/3H then to see him bid 3D over 2H.

The biggest upside of X over 1S is to be able to play 2C instead of 1S but since i dont expect to buy the hand at 2C i think 1S is superior.

Double for me as well, I think this one is clear. Pass is obviously out when you have such a comfortable double available and 1NT is too risky. With AQ10x xxx Jx KJxx I'm probably bidding 1S but Arend tells me not to do it on hands this strong.

One table overcalled 1NT, pard had

xxxx

xxx

ATx

Axx

and the limit is 8 tricks in spades (2 hearts, one diamond, two spades). so pard bid 2 and passed 2? sort of weird I thought. Other table went down two in 3, I forgot to look at their auction.
