Your call?

2/1, IMPs, vulnerable

Partner opens the bidding:

1 p 1nt p

2 2 ???

What's your call, and what's your plan?

If you bid either 3c or 3h, partner bids 3nt.

Why would you bid 3 with diamond support?

3, then 4. If partner makes noise over this I'll just check on keys. If partner bids 5 I will respect his signoff.

These are pretty much my thoughts too.

I would have bid 2 on the previous round though. Are we seriously ever stopping short of game vulnerable at IMPS?

I am definitely not stopping short of game.

Did 2D promise 4+ diamonds?

If not, I will bid 3H then over partner's 3NT I will kick with a further 4C.

If yes, I will bid 4H over 2H.

Assuming that 1NT denied a game force (which wasn't stated), 3H should promise diamond support anyway - how else can we suddenly have found a game force that didn't exist before.

I bid 3H over 2H, then 4S over 3NT.

We need to know partner's rebid over 1N with 5=3=3=2. Many (including me) would rebid 2, hence our 2 shows 4+.

In that case, I like my hand so much that I am going to splinter: 4.

I don't mind 3, but I'm going to game anyway and 4 tells partner a great deal about my hand: not 3 spades, stiff or void heart, 5+ diamonds and a lot of working honours for my 1N call.

OK, so the problems are the following:

- we are not rebidding 2c on 5=3=3=2, we are bidding 2d. There are merits/demerits to both styles I know but we are playing the more common way.

- 1nt didn't deny 3s, as you can hold a 3 card limit raise in most 2/1 styles. Luckily 3s/4s on the 2nd turn can unambiguously handle these hands so this isn't a problem.

Partner turns up with KT9xx KQx AQT xx. 5d has no play, losing 1 trick in each non-trump suit. 3nt has no play either. 4s is cold as diamonds split.

Frances' auction seems to work out best. For those bidding 3h-3nt-4d, or other sequences, who is supposed to bid spades again, and when? Or are you also missing 4s?

With the T9 of S and only 3D i think playing in 4S is pretty clear. Partner as so many bid available that 1 one them show Hx in spades and a D fit. In a standard partnership i would assume

4S i had a limit but ive upgrade my hand because of the 2D bid.

4H splinter d fit

3S limit raise

3H good hand unclear direction.

However i prefer that the upgraded limit is in 3H because of slam possibility. So for me 4S show the huge D fit and Hx in spades.
