The only chance

You play in 6: [hv=n=skq42hat5dak65ca5&s=sjt97653h73dqjtcq]133|200|LHO passes as dealer. Pard opens 2 clubs, 2 diamonds by you and LHO now comes in with 4 clubs. Pard doubles and raises 4S to 6. LHO leads the QH. [/hv]

You win the A. Are there any distributions that will let this make? Hint: Look at the bidding.

If LHO has the singleton A and no more than 2, I can make.

I am not going to spoil the thread by posting my solution, but I am interested in how one makes the contract on this layout.. if lho ruffs the 3rd diamond (or an earlier one) he plays another heart and down we go.

If the two missing trump are in the same hand as 4 (or even 3)  then you are fine, but it would be a bit hair raising to play 3 rounds of  before touching the trump.

Hair-raising is going back to your home table after going bait in a cold slam.

LHO needs to be 0=4=2=7 or 0=5=2=6. Not at all unlikely on the bidding - he passed and then preempted, remember?

This came home. My opponent said, "YOU ARE VERY LUCKY".

We beat them by 50.

3 isn't good enough. They trump your 4th diamond with a baby and you are SOL.

Hi Phil,

Don't understand why LHO must be void in spades? why can they divide 1-1?

LHO could also be 1-3-2-7...

I have two loser a and the one I will never get rid of A.

So I only see two possibilities of losing the loser in the 4th or in a .

I also have to think, I guess if the Q isn't a singleton and if the trump don't break 1-1 I will maybe be giving a ruff...

I will do the folowing before touching trump...

Come to my hand in a Diamond low to the Q..., lead the Q, if LHO has KJ we will raise with the K and I will have to take the ace, but maybe he ducks, and I can discard on my A.

If not I will try for the 1-1 break it's 52%, and discard on the 4

Yeah, what I posted is definitely wrong.

The play is to run all 4 diamonds, and hope they stick. As Phil said, you make if LHO has 2- diamonds and no trump.

I was thinking that you ALSO could make if LHO had 3 diamonds also the singleton ace of trump, but you can't both overruff the 8 of trump from RHO and discard your heart loser. (This would work if diamonds were 3-4+, so let's call it another counting error on my part....)
