onoway
This is a lot fancier than the ones we get here, as far as I know. Dunno what caused it but it's rather nice..at least from above. It seems unlikely it would look like much at ground level. Maybe someone with way too much time on their hands should take up bridge.Anyway, something for all the mathmeticians out there.:(http://www.astroengine.com/?p=
gwnn
It's super nice. It would be rather arrogant to assume aliens would send us messages based on the decimal system, though. I'm not by nature much of a skeptic, but somehow these crop circles never seemed to be serious to me.
y66
Awesome. If any aliens are reading this, PM me if you want to try this on my lawn. The mower is under the porch.
Al_U_Card
And here I thot that it was the hollow-earth Aggarthans that were sending psychic energy wave messages to the Zeta-reticulons that left behind those "ripples" in the fields as they passed thru on their way to outer space... :)
kenberg
It's a nice arrangement and I see it as virtually conclusive proof that these various crop pictures are created by human hand. Here is why: True, Pi is sufficiently universal that it is reasonable to think that it would be discovered by other intelligent species. The decimal representation of Pi is another matter. Base ten is arbitrary, presumably because we have ten fingers/thumbs on our two hands. In many ways octal would be better. I think the Incas used base 12, more or less (their system was weird). Of course the ETs could have been reading our mail, noticed that we used base ten, and decided to show themselves by sending a message in base ten. Uh huh. The usual guess is that an intelligent civilization would show their presence with primes. $$$$$$$$$$$$$ is a prime number of dollar signs whether the number is written as 13 base ten, as 15 base eight, or as 1101 base 2. Primeness is an intrinsic property of a number, independent of its representation. The sequence $$ $$$ $$$$$ $$$$$$$ $$$$$$$$$$$ $$$$$$$$$$$$$ would be recognized immediately by (many not all) people in another galaxy. $$$ $ $$$$ $ $$$$$ $$$$$$$$$ would be recognized as the start of the representation of Pi only by a civilization that represented numbers in the Hindu/Arabic style, using the base ten. BTW Despite the title, the pattern has nothing to do with fractals. No big deal.
Fluffy
Wow, so nice, so true. Very good post Kenberg. BTW, if a human might decoy the message, then a human might create it. only if very high technology was needed to decode it (actually to code it also) you might proof something. For example, they could paint the sings in the moon.
gwnn
I said the same thing 2 days ago Gonzalo :) :)
kenberg
So you did. My mistake. I try not to repeat other's comments but I slipped up. My apologies.
helene_t
With respect to the alien hypothesis I think the base ten issue is a minor one. Aliens might by chance use base ten as well, or they might know that we use it. Is this "Pi" observation real? The Bible Code, and all the numerological explanations for the dimensions of the Pyramids, come to mind. Assuming it is a real observation, it strengthens the case for the hypothesis that the crop circles are made by intelligent animals, most likely H. Sapiens from the planet Earth. The alternative being something like the hex rings made by fungi or some such.
