NickRW
OK, bit like trying to pick a winner out of 100 horse race, but just for a laugh, how about: SPINGOLD* 4 losing quarterfinalists (3 points each)* 2 losing semifinalists (6 points each)* Runner-up (12 points)* The winner (24 points) Quarters: O'Rourke #3, Ekeblad #9, Lynch #12, Mahaffey #16Semis: Strul #4, Cayne #2Runner up: Nickell #1Winner: Gromov #5 WAGAR* 2 losing semifinalists (4 points each)* Runner-up (8 points each)* The winner (16 points) Semis: Yalan #5, Jacobs #6Runner up: Bjerkan #3Winner: Fireman #1 Tie breaker = 43. Most probably I will score nothing! Nick
HeavyDluxe
OK, bit like trying to pick a winner out of 100 horse race...Yeah, that's the reason I thought give ppl 'til tomorrow to submit. At least by that point you're down to 32 teams to choose from... If we extended the deadline into Thursday, we basically 'lose' the Wagar. I'm no opposed to that. Then you're picking from 16 teams in the Spingold. If the group feels strongly, we can extend the picks into Thursday. Thoughts?
jkdood
Good luck and happy VuGraphing! HAPPY VU-GRAPHING? There's no mention of the Spingold on the BBO VuGraph schedule for 2008!(Or anywhere)See thread in BBO Forum "Vu-Graphs"
PeterGill
Spingold Cayne (2) to win by 26 imps from Strul (4), then Brogeland (17) and O'Rourke (3), followed by Mahaffey (16), Shi (45), Diamond (24) and Kamil (23). Notable omission: Team 1, because I think some players in Teams 16 and 17 have good form, making Team 1's draw too tough. Better to be seeded 2 or 3 this time. WagarMcCallum (2) by 1 imp from Fireman (1) then Yalan (5) and Bjerkan (3) followed by Jacobs (6), Westheimer (8) , Mancuso (4) and Sulgrove (7). Peter Gill. jkdood
Update from Jan (Thanks Jan!): There will be Vugraph from the Spingold, but they didn't know when it would start because of not knowing the number of teams. I think they're trying to start it today, but since I'm being a bridge player at least for another day and hopefully longer, I don't actually know. I promise they're planning to cover from the Round of 32 at least.

Aberlour10
Has anyone found a nice tree showing the brackets? I suppose ACBL will publish it after todays round is finished.
TimG
Has anyone found a nice tree showing the brackets? ACBL has one up for the Wagar. They have a tendency not to put up[ bracket sheets until the round of 16, so I suspect there won't be one until after completion of play on Wednesday. hrothgar
All this is predicated on the assumption that Cayne plays the length of the series Four Losing Quartfinalists: 2: Cayne4: Struhl6: Schwartz8: Meltzer Two Losing Semi Finalists: 1. Nickell7. Sadek Losing Finalist: 3. O'RourkeTop Dog: 5. Gromov [Edit: Guess it was a mistake not to have looked at last night's results before picking Struhl to make it into the elite 8... Oh well]
655321
After seeing the brackets, my guess is: QF: Brogeland(#17), Konow(#61), Narasimhan(#10), O'Rourke(#3)SF: Meltzer(#8), Schwarz(#6)RU: Gromov(#5)W: Weed(#2) I had picked Strul instead of Konow before today's bulletin reported the results. MFA is playing in team Konow. :(
HeavyDluxe
Here's my shot: SPINGOLD* 4 losing quarterfinalists: ♣ Meltzer (#8), ♣ Sadek (#7) , ♣ Goren (#55), ♣ O'Rourke (#3)* 2 losing semifinalists: ♦ Lynch (#12), ♦ Schwartz (#6)* Runner-up: ♥ Weed (#2) * The winner: ♠ Nickell (#1) WAGAR* 2 losing semifinalists: ♦ Mancuso (#4), ♦ Jacobs (#5)* Runner-up: ♥ Fireman (#1)* The winner: ♠ Baker (#2) One FINAL note: Remember you can edit your picks until 1PM Las Vegas time today. At that point, I'll pull all the picks out into a spreadsheet for scoring. Thanks!

HeavyDluxe
Small group... but I've got everyone's entries. Good luck! Oh, and I forgot my guess for margin of victory - 10 IMPs in the Spingold.

cherdano
I am not sure they want to be congratulated, but cardsharp's team came close enough to scare Nickell - they lost by 19 IMPs over 64 boards.http://thebeercard.blogspot.com/2008/07/second-half.html Great performance! HeavyDluxe
Well, just thought I'd post an update on the scores to date... Right now, cherdano is in a pretty commanding lead (about 20 points on paper), but he has maxed out his points. His last 'live' teams in the Spingold - Gromov and Weed - were his picks to lose in the semifinals. So, even if one of them goes on to win it won't be worth more than 6 points to him. Currently in a solid 2nd is PeterGill, thanks in part to some solid picks in Wagar. In fact, Peter will score some serious points for his pick of the Cayne team. 655321 actually could win handily, given that he still has Meltzer, Gromov, and Weed as live picks. More tomorrow. HeavyDluxe
Thanks to all who participated in the 2008 Spingold/Wagar Pool... Sorry for the delay! As promised, here are the final standings: 1. cherdano (45pts)2. hrothgar 3. NickRW 4. Peter Gill 5. HeavyDluxe6. 655321 Congrats, Arend! Your picked a pretty middle-of-the-pack Spingold, but were powered victory by totally p0wning the Wagar picks. A couple other notes, just for giggles:♣ The overall spread from winner to 6th place was 15pts. ♦ If we were playing for the Spingold picks alone, hrothgar would be the runaway winner. He scored points for almost all his picks (only 'zeroing' on two) and backed the winning Gromov team for a whopping 24 pts by itself. If he entered an 'average' set of picks for the Wagar, he'd be the winner... ♥ The 'total' spread was relatively tight between all pickers, so well done! ♠ My closing thought would be that the weightings *might* be worth a little refinement for any future pools... But maybe I'm just being bitter! Thanks all... And congrats to the winners. Next pool: Beijing?
