Double only suggests 4432 IMHO. P could have an 18-19 balanced so 4 must have some play, but he could also be 3154 or 4153. I suppose some of my p's would be crazy enough to understand 3 so that's what I bid. (As usual I voted for the monkey because I misread the auction).

The first pass was silly? I don't think so with a 1 count. If you bid 1H I guess you would be delighted to hear 3C or 3C, yes?

I bid 2H now. A double is terrrible, because that is where it might well be played.

IMPs, right? Just call me Mr. Monkey.

I have 1 hcp. Either somebody's an idiot or partner's hoping I'll X because he's sitting there with 5-5 in the minors and an 18 count.

I'm not calling my P an idiot, so I'm not bidding in case he forgot to X. If one of the opponents is an idiot, then I'm very happy to let them play in 2. And if my partner's hoping to play 2 doubled...well, I think he's hoping for a little bit more from me, but I have no interest in playing in a misfit when they can do the same!

I'm sorry, but I see no advantage to bidding here. Just how much does partner need to double?!

I double for takeout.

I would have responded, but I don't hate the initial pass enough to abstain.

Double will work well if we have a decent major suit fit, or if partner passes 2X. He heard us pass his opening bid, and will realize we are lacking in the HCP department.

The most dangerous continuations after double seem to me to be when partner assumes a diamond fit, and bids too many diamonds in a competitive auction. But, because he did not rebid 2, and because LHO is a passed hand, this danger is (hopefully) not too great.
