han
A109876863AK65 None, IMPs. Partner deals and passes, RHO opens 1H. Do you double?
helene_t
No. Change a club to a spade and I would pass and feel old. As it is, I just pass and feel normal.

kenrexford
Not remote. Pass.
gnasher
I'm horrified that the question even needs to be asked. You would have to turn a heart into a spade or diamond before I'd double.
andy_h
Partner's a passed hand? Definitely pass. If he wasn't? hmm I would be a bit more understanding but the hand looks like it lacks ♦Q or something..
han
I'm horrified that the question even needs to be asked. Alright alright. Let's just say I saw someone double and wanted to know if others would.
mr1303
I might double if I wanted some help with a lead, but not such a problem on this hand, since I know what I'm going to lead

I'm not horrified, but I'm deeply troubled.

I admit it's certainly not perfect and when i don't have a true shortage of RHO's suit I would very much prefer a 4th card in the major, in this case spades. This is just my style, I like to get into the auction early if partner is unable to act with like a random 7/8 count. Having said that, I may lean towards a pass if it came up at the table. But give me a 4th spade making my hand AT9x 876 Q6x AK6 I think I would be tempted to dbl. Changing situations of having my RHO opening say 1D and I held AT9 Q63 876 AK65 that would be an automatic dbl for me.
matmat
so is there an end to the story?
cherdano
so is there an end to the story? I doubled. It seems to me on many auctions you will be happy that you have doubled (you want partner to bid his 5-card suit in almost any partscore auction, and you certainly don't like to balance over 1H 1N or 1H 2H).In the actual auction I wasn't so happy I doubled, first LHO bid 4♥ (precision) and I had to hope partner wouldn't bid, then thankfully he passed but RHO amazingly got the spade guess right at trick 3 with KJx in dummy... I am a little surprised about the strong feelings in this thread, e.g. I would never dream of passing if you also give me ♦Q opposite an unpassed partner

Opening a nice 4432 9-count is a lot more shocking than a nice 5532 11-count. Same for a nice 4432 13-count 1NT (15-17).
Guest Jlall
Agree with Ken, an additional (well placed) queen is a lot. And even then you've created a minimum for most people (or a hand that a lot of people would pass with anyways). To me your comment is like saying you're shocked people would feel strongly about passing a 4333 10 count in first seat.
cherdano
Heh, I didn't express shock, just surprise, and the additional queen was gnasher's construction (who expressed shock at a double with that).
