Can't have it all

3N. Tough problem but I think 3 aims for a narrow target when 4 is better than 3N on a 5-3. Plus I have to do somethin with dem diamonds in spades.

In 3N we might have the choice of going after hearts or spades. Pard isn't barred over 3N either.

Good title.

I think this is a tough problem and that any of pass, 3, and 3NT could work out well. Let me talk aloud through them.

Pass - Partner is only balancing and this may be our only chance for a plus score. We do have two aces that will help partner out.

3 - Great if we catch three spades from partner. I think however, that partner may double with some 3=5=1=4 hands (I know I would). He may be 3=6=x=y though and 4 is the superior contract. I just think the odds are against 3 working out as it pretty much rules out getting to 3NT if that's the right spot.

3NT - Well, we have good stoppers in diamonds and may avoid something like diamonds being 7=4=0=2 around the table and getting an opening lead ruffing finesse. Certainly has a lot of upside for the vulnerable game.

All in all, I'm going to go with 3NT, but certainly not with any great conviction.
