andy_h
I do the knuckle trick. I've heard of the song but never memorised it since the knuckle trick is so easy! Oddly enough, most of my (oz) friends have never heard of the knuckle trick but they all know the song, but non-oz dudes are the other way around. I guess the song is (only) in english after all..? jdonn
The knuckle trick my whole life. As I was watching the youtube clip I was thinking to myself, someone actually taped this and put it online? Then I saw it was copyrighted... gwnn
we have a very short but effective trick ap-ju-se-no everybody knows of february and you need to know it's june, not july. BTW the knuckle trick as I saw it on youtube is miles ahead of the one we do in Eastern Europe! we'd go til July, but then we wouldn't start from the right, we'd start going right, but jumping over a valley "because we respect Julius Caesar". I always thought that was a retarded thing to say. why would we respect Julius Caesar? :P this makes much much more sense, no wonder America has a superior social structure etc.
jillybean
I just check my calendar :P but failing that, I use the knuckles. I was born in Britain and my mother always used the little rhyme but as far as I can remember, I learned the knuckles at school in New Zealand. I dont know what they use here, I wouldn't be surprised if USA/Canada has its very own version.
nickf
Am I missing something ? Beyond about 10 years of age, don't most people just know how many days are in each month without the aid of a ditty or two hands? nickfsydney

helene_t
I must be from the same planet as Nick but it doesn't surprise me that many people need memory aids. Just like I can't write a single sentence in any language with spell check.

MickyB
I never have any idea how many days are in the month. I rarely have any idea how many days are in the current month, but that's just because I rarely know what month it is.
EricK
I know how many days are in each month. But then my work involves a lot of calculations involving dates and I like to keep my brain active by not doing everything on a spreadsheet. The knuckle trick is much more useful than the song. After all, since a lot of the month names rhyme, you can easily get the song wrong. Thirty days hath September That is all that I remember. han
Asking someone works for me as well. What trick do they use? Of course the initial question makes no sense in a multicultural setting, we certainly don't get tought English songs in kindergarten. jtfanclub
I'm lucky if I can remember the number of days in a week! "Is it Friday yet?" "Well, let's see, yesterday was Monday, so that makes today..." "Thursday?"
barmar
I just know them by heart now, but when I was younger I used the knuckle trick until they became ingrained in my memory. I'm pretty sure I learned it from a book (I read lots of math puzzle and trick books when I was a kid). I can even picture the diagram in my mind. nickf
but I tell you what is really scary - is the people who can tell you what day of the week Jun 15, 1702 was, for example. I've read of savants doing this. nickfsydney
EricK
but I tell you what is really scary - is the people who can tell you what day of the week Jun 15, 1702 was, for example. I've read of savants doing this. nickfsydney Can they tell you the answer for every country? June 15 1702 was during the period when various countries were switching from the Julian to the Gregorain calendar. For instance, Shakespeare and Cervantes both died on April 23 1616. But Cervantes died ten days before Shakespeare because Spain was using the Gregorian calendar but England was still using the Julian calendar. kenrexford
A friend of mine came up with a solution for knowing what day of the week it is. Mondays just have a feel.Tuesdays? Just the "two." So far, not so good.Wednesdays? You start feeling like, "When is the weekend ever getting here?" When's-day.Thursdays you feel thirsty for beer.Fridays? That's when you get fried.Sat-urdays? You sit around all day with a hangover, 'til evening.Sunday? After the second hangover, the sun seems particularly bright. Seemed to work OK.
