really tough, playing butler i'd bid 4s playing teams it would depend on the state of the match and anticipation of what could happen at the other table (although this can backfire)

I would bid 4 playing IMPs, cross-IMPs, butler, MPs, BAM, at any colors, in a weak or strong field, against good or bad opponents, in a long or short match, no matter how long either of my opponents thought about their bids, regardless of the weather outside.

Opps playing 5cM 15-17 NT, 1 from LHO, pass from partner and 4 on your right.

What do you go for. Pass, 4 or double?

They aren't playing strong NT, a 1NT opening would have been 9-11.

But pretty irrelevant as they generally don't open 1NT with a 5-card major anyway.

Anyway, last time I had this hand like this I bid 4S and went for 800. My partner told me he thought double was right.

This time we were both watching on the hand, and my partner told me he thought 4S was right. I told him he was being inconsistent, but that didn't get us very far.

i couldn't think of a good player who wouldn't make a sour face when introduced to this hand

I would also bid 4S when playing in a home game or a bar. I would bid 4S when trying to bluff my toddler at Go Fish. OK maybe not the last one.

Seriously, preempts work. If LHO doubles 4S in a shot, then I'll have something to think about.
