OK, In the same set as the awful 3NT, I had this hand.

lho pd rho you

----------------------------------

-- 1 1 Dbl

P 1 2 2

3 3 4 ?

I didn't have a good feel for this hand when I picked it up and I'm not sure I like how I bid it.

1) Do you agree with your actions so far?

2) What now?

Normally, your double of 1 shows 4-4 in the majors. Is that your agreement?

I find the opponents' bidding up to 4 in the face of your heart holding very unsettling. The question is, are your hearts good enough to beat 4?

I am going to double 4. It may make, but I only need partner to come up with 2 tricks to beat 4. I fully expect to score 2 trump tricks.

Partner did open the bidding. He doesn't appear to have done so on a wildly distributional hand, or else you might have heard about it by now.

I don't believe we are making 4. Given the auction, partner might have bid it already if we were making.

Lead a club and hope that is good enough.

Typical BBO no-discussion partnership. Maybe the decision after 1C-1D is the most interesting

* pass?

* 1S?

* Dbl?

I would have bid 1S fwiw.

I would have passed 2, assuming I X'd the first time. Now we're screwed. We're gonna take 1 club, and two hearts (straight or ruff, doesn't matter), and if I don't X partner's gonna do it for me, because he thinks I have a 10 count with 4 spades, not a 4 count with 10, er, 6 spades.

Out in left field again, huh?

need to know the agreement for X but i would probably pass. The possible agreements for the X i know are

1- at least 43 in the majors.

2- at least 4-4 in the majors all shapes.

3- at least 4-4 in the majors (equal or longer hearts.)

4- exactly 4H (because 1H show 5+)

5- a 4M and 4 clubs.

6- beginner often play that a 1M show 5 so they X with any 4M hands.

I prefer 4 & i really hate 2&6. With 5S and 4H i really think the best bid is 1S unless you plan to make only 1 bid. With 6S and 4H i would have bid 1S but this hand is too weak so i would have passed.

Yes it is. I double in that context.

A spade lead is standout.

I'd have bid 1. Hearts are unlikely to play better unless partner is 1=4 in the majors.

Having doubled, 2 seems obvious on the second round and pass seems correct now. They've bid 4 knowing that I have four, so I have no great surprise for them. Against that, they haven't had much space for exploration, so saving would express more confidence in their auction than it merits.

I'd be surprised if partner doubled, but if he does I'll be happy.

IMO

  • Over 1, _X = 10, 1 = 8, _P = 7.
  • Over 4, _P = 10, _X = 8, 4 = 4

I've got little to spare and I've told partner what I've got so let him decide.

4 is inadvisable mainly because it may prompt partner to compete further.
