Sambolino
too many combinations in which 4s will make, so 5h
jtfanclub
I'm the only vote for pass. Weird. Well, OK, maybe not so weird. I have no interest in X. If the opp has a heart void (and given the auction, I suspect he does) I don't expect to take 4 tricks.
Halo
5H I would not have bid 2H - because of this sort of auction, but I can express an opinion from where we are. Partner doesn't need much for us to make, and opponents may well be making their contract. Two reasons for bidding on. In addition having bid 2H, I would be anxious about how much of my hand I had already bid.
ArtK78
5♥. I agree with the 2♥ call. There are actually three reasons for bidding 5♥: 1) You may make.2) They may make, and 5♥ will be a good sac if it does not make.3) They may bid 5♠. brianshark
What on earth would you do instead of 2♥? Anyway, I'm bidding 5♥ now.
Apollo81
5♥ expecting to make much of the time. Hell, they might even bid 5♠
helene_t
Stupid question but ..... if I double will p ever take it out, or is it 100% penalty?
Apollo81
Stupid question but ..... if I double will p ever take it out, or is it 100% penalty? Well he's already shown a weak hand with a bunch of hearts, so I'd say never or almost never
pclayton
5♥. RHO looks very black, so our prospects against 4♠ are bleak.

jtfanclub
Huh, when I wrote my post, there were 4 votes for X, one vote for 5♥, and my vote for pass. I have no problem with 5♥. I'm simply convinced that when my partner bid 4♥, she had a plan, and I don't want to ruin that plan. Eh, I'll change my vote. 5♥. I cannot imagine how partner could have a trap with my spade holding.
ulven
With a likely very black hand on your right, isn't there any slaminterest over here? Give partner something like xx/Qxxx/AQx/xxxx and we're claiming at trick 1. Ok, thats' a very perfect minimum, but I still think you should bid 5C or something. Guest Jlall
What on earth would you do instead of 2♥? Lol, seriously? Why do you make comments like this? If you added a single jack the the hand I bet you would say "What on earth would you do instead of doubling?" FWIW I think this is a clear X, this hand is way too good to just overcall 2H, and you have a good enough hand/suit where you are comfortable with pretty much every continuation of the auction. Now I would bid 5H, but I don't think it is so clear. If partner has club values we need to be doubling, and if he has diamonds it could be a double game swing. han
I don't think that's a minimum. Agree with 5H.
mikeh
I agree with 2♥, altho I also agree that it is close to double then hearts... that spade holding is an upgrade as is the heart texture. My immediate reaction was a wtp double... extra values, extra defence, but my second reaction is that this is far tougher than it superficially appears. As Justin says, it depends on where partner's values are. I don't agree that RHO is necessarily all black: yes, he is slightly more likely to be all black than all pointed, but not by an overwhelming margin. My second reaction is thus to bid 5♥, aware that this may trade +200 for minus 100 or 200.. and 400 is 9 imps, so this isn't the classic case of cheap insurance. Nevertheless, bidding is right whenever either or both contracts make and wrong only when both fail, so the odds appear to favour bidding on. Finch
Frances, What was the layout this time? I like to give polls a day or two to mature. Not everyone is logged on non-stop. Funnily enough when I had the hand my immediate reaction was a wtp double but then I thought for quite a lot longer and eventually bid 5H. I don't like double-then-bid on single-suited hands unless I'm mega-strong (i.e. prepared to bid my suit at the 5-level) but I agree on this hand your spade honours make it less likely that you will have to make a 5-level decision. As it happens overcalling 2H has worked well as you know more about partner's hand than if you had doubled. With a likely very black hand on your right, isn't there any slaminterest over here? Give partner something like xx/Qxxx/AQx/xxxx and we're claiming at trick 1. Ok, thats' a very perfect minimum, but I still think you should bid 5C or something. I think your quoted hand is a 2S bid, but give partner xxxxxxAxxxxxx and you still want to be in slam Anyway, on this hand bidding 5H is superlatively right as all of 4S, 5C (their way) and 5H make. RHO hasKJ10xxxxQAAJxx and partnerxx10xxxxQxxxxx
Hanoi5
I would have probably doubled before showing my hearts in the first round.
skjaeran
I've got a real powerhouse overcall here. Pass and double surely is out. I'd try 5♣, hoping to hear 5♦ from partner....
brianshark
What on earth would you do instead of 2♥? Lol, seriously? Why do you make comments like this? If you added a single jack the the hand I bet you would say "What on earth would you do instead of doubling?" Sorry yeah, I didn't consider that it might be good enough to double first. It just didn't cross my mind. I just looked at it and saw a typical max vulnerable overcall (which I still think it is) but maybe it's a better hand than I gave it credit.
