is this hand an auto 3nt bid?

Recommended Posts

4 for me.

There are only 3 plausible calls here: 3NT, 4 and 4.

3NT is bad because partner likely has short diamonds, and we can't hold up at all - without 9 runners, 3NT won't make.

4 is reasonable, but partner might not have 4 hearts.

4 looks best to me. Partner being 4-4 in the majors and electing to bid 4 instead of 4 is really the only downside to 4.

I don't understand the 4 Diamond bid.

When pd has 5-3 in the majors, he had bid spades, not double.

When he has 5-4 4 Heart is fine.

When he is 4-4 we want to play 4 Heart.

When he is 4-3, I really don't care if we play this or that 4-3 fit.

There is no reason to believe that 4 Spades play better in that case. If our hand had been 3415, there is a point to play 4 Spade. But now....

Looking at a good hand with 5-3 in the majors, many people will double, e.g.

KQJxx

AQx

x

KQxx

the idea being you double, then bid 3S over 3H to show a flexible hand with 5 spades.

Alternatively, if you think partner would always over in spades with a 5-card suit, 4D (two possible strains) will get you to clubs opposite something a little offshape such as

KQxx

Ax

Ax

AJ10xx

(of course if you play in clubs on this hand, you will be playing in clubs on the first one as well, you can't cope with everything)
