navit
[hv=w=sj7h954dj873ca963&e=sa1098532hq107d5cj4]266|100|[/hv] I played E-4th hand. Opponents opened with pass. pass pass (partner) 1 h (op-N) E ? What should I bid? In general what is the rule for weak/ preempt bids. Is it best to have honors in the long suit. Does it matter what hand? Thanks
han
I would preempt. I can't tell you how high without knowing the vulnerability.
jtfanclub
I would preempt. I can't tell you how high without knowing the vulnerability. I vote for 2♠, regardless of vulnerability. I have 3 hearts, the spade suit ain't all that, and I'm not going to care if it's -300 or -500 if they don't have game. I suppose if I play IJO's only at some vulnerability (instead of "anything that can't make game across a balanced 11") then I get stuck. But in B/I, I feel safe that 2♠ is the right bid. gwnn
I will prove that I almost never preempt any more and advocate 1♠ here. I just hate hate hate hate Axxx..., however high the x's.

P_Marlowe
Hi, Preempt, as high as you dare. The standard rule is, that a preempt at green promises a hand, which goes down at most 3, at red a hand, which goes down at most 2, this always assumes partner is dead. Depending how you calculate, you will loose 3 tricks in the minors, at least 2 heart tricks (some may count 2,5, other may count 3) and at least 2 spade tricks, makes 7 tricks, which you are gonna loose with optimistic counting. The above rule would translate too 3S, if green, and too 2S if red.If you think the counting too optimistic, this would mean you pass being red and bid 2S being green.....................................................................There is another rule, the 2-3-4 rule, which says, that you go down at most 2 if we are red and they are green, at most 3, if both sides are green / red, and at most 4, if we are green and they are red. If they double you, you will pay slightly more than if they make game their way. With kind regardsMarlowe
hotShot
Partners average strength is smaller than 10 HCP, so I think that opps are close to game, if they have a fit. I have a 7 card suit and it's almost sure that we have a fit here, so it is likely that they have a fit somewhere. (If not r/w) I bid 3♠ and let LHO do some thinking about bidding on the 4 level. neilkaz
I would preempt 2♠ if Red and 3♠ if White. Your overall hand requires some caution against preemption so I wouldn't go nuts. You have an ace for defence, you're missing 3 key honors and if they're in one defender's hand you may get X'd and possibly hurt on a hand where the opp have no game, or have lots of difficulty finding it over 2♠. Also you QTx in their opened suit seems useful for defence but may be useless for offence.

Also you QTx in their opened suit seems useful for defence but may be useless for offence. I really don't think this can be emphasized enough. Your having 3 hearts to the queen makes it much less likely that they can make 4♥ or 3NT. So there are two reasons not to get overexcited with this hand. One is that your suit isn't great, but the main one is because even if they have 25 hcp between them, it's unlikely they have game. I'm not going to take a chance that they have so much extra power that 3♠ is safe w/r, because when I'm right, they tend to bid the game anyways and when I'm wrong it's a crusher. If you switch the hearts with either diamonds or clubs, I would bid 3♠ NV.
