East opens 1 (3+)

South overcalls 2 (Majors)[/hv]

You are having a horrid day in a teams tournament, and things are about to get worse LOL.

Playing 'Dodgified Standard American', which includes a basic Unusual Vs Unusual, the first decision for mine here seems to be whether to bid 2 or 2. The shape looks good, and the values reasonable, but the suit itself is a bit iffy.

Maybe 2 outta 3 aint bad, but I chose 2.

What happened next is too painful to describe, but it got me wondering...

What do East's bids now mean? Can UvU be 'extended' such that 2 would be a strong hand with good s and 2 be a cue-raise for s? Or are these bids better reserved for something else?

Do you have an agreement for this kind of situation? How would you bid this?

Thanks,

Justin.

Did North really pass with 5 spades? I would expect the bidding to be at the 4 level on East's 2nd turn. I don't like splintering with a stiff K so I'd start with 2. Either way we'd get to 6 and sniff at 7.

Yes, North really did pass, though with only four Spades (South had KQJ762 J8432 93 -).
