When a convention backfires

Some conventions are excellent, and one poor result does not prove anything. However, bear in mind that sometimes these conventions may backfire. You don't get anything for nothing. Compare the following two auctions on this deal:

A:

1 1 1 pass

4 - all pass

B:

1 2NT* 3** pass

4 - all pass

* The unusual 2NT, hearts and diamonds, at least 5-5.

** non-forcing.

The lead is 5.

- How do you play the hand after auction A?

- How do you play the hand after auction B?

You may want to start with B, no problem, but please remember which forum we are in and hold back if you are advanced or better.

Re. auction B, what Helene said: Draw trumps, cash the top hearts and clubs and exit in Hearts to East who has to concede a ruff and discard or lead Diamond into the King.

After auction A, not so nice. I think the Diamond Ace is likely to be offside given the overcall on a mediocre suit. So I play for split Club honours: Draw trumps and Hearts and exit in Hearts leaving the Clubs untouched. I expect RHO to lead an unsupported Club honour back to put me to the guess, but I still play for split honours.

If RHO leads a small Club I play low from hand, then another Club up to the Ace and exit in Clubs (even if the Club T finesse would have worked it is unnecessary to take it). If LHO wins the third Club I have a forelorn hope of the Diamond Ace being onside but I reckon I am going down.

Good case example.

The strange thing is that I'd actually be in the worst of all positions, because I'd probably open the hand 2NT. That sucks.

Naw!!! 4333 is too rich with no tens.
