leading a suit with touching honors

Recommended Posts

I have a quick question out there for responders:

Defending against a suit contract, when you have decided to lead an unbid suit in which you have touching QJ or JT and no other relevant spots, do you always lead an honor? What circumstances would make you choose to lead a spot card as opposed to the honor combination generally?

It depends on partner's expected length in the suit and where I think the missing honors and high spots are likely to be. If you want to try to capture or knock out a higher honor on your left, you usually have to lead an honor, but if RHO is likely to have a high spot you may be setting this up. But if the high honor is likely to be on your right and partner is short, leading low doesn't waste your controls in the suit.

But if I hold QJ9x, and dummy on my right has KTx, I'll lead the Q -- partner should know that I have the suit under control.
