Random Hand 3

Playing 2/1, the opponents are decent. You are in 4th seat (South) holding:

[hv=d=w&v=n&s=s5hat6543dkq7ckq6]133|100|Scoring: IMP[/hv]

Auction goes:

P---1C*---4S---X

P---4NT----P----?

1C = can be short, X=takeout/cards, 4NT=2 places to play

What do you bid? If it matters or w/e, you're allowed to open light with distributional hands but not like bal 11counts etc.

I'm definitely going to slam, I would just bid 6C. I don't see how to get to 6H when he has clubs and hearts (for instance if you think he'll bid hearts over 5N with that, then he will also bid diamonds over 5N when he has diamonds).

With an advanced partner I would bid 5Nt PAS that show 3 clubs or a red 2suiter. Partner will bid 5C everytime hes got 6 of them and will only bid 5D with 3 suiter 0445,1444 & with 1345,1435 (with lousy clubs)

We have two bids available to offer a choice of slams. It makes sense for 5 to show hearts and a minor, and 5NT to show both minors. That's consistent with other situations, like (3) 4/4NT. Maybe one should have a general agreement that with a choice of takeout bids at the same level you always use a Michaels/UNT structure.

Yes, until you decide that you want 5S to be a grand slam try with first round spade control, and 5NT just to be choice of slams with no grand ambitions (i.e. no spade control).

I agree your interpretation might be better (strain before level) but mine is what most people seem to play.
