Red spot

I have encountered several instances when a player APPEARS to be frozen, in that it is his turn to bid or play but no action. But there is no red spot to indicate bad connection. When the players prompt him to act he not infrequently claims indignantly that he has bid/played and that it is not his turn.

In other words, all of the symptoms of a bad connection but without the red spot.

Then the level of politeness at the table tends to diminish, as players assume that there must be an explanation other than bad connection, to explain the delay.

So my question is this: How reliable is the ABSENCE of a red spot as an indicator that the connection is NOT bad?

Thanks

It seems to me that the presence, or absence, of the little Red Stop Sign used to be much more reliable than it currently is.

Since I live in a country where the government has a monopoly on providing telecommunications service, and also live far enough from a major city that I cannot get broadband, I've become much better acquainted with the "Red Dot Problem" than I'm happy with.

It used to be that I'd see the red dot sometimes flicker off and on a few times both on others and on my own name. It seems to me that now I don't notice it come on then go off very often. When I see a red dot on another player now, they invariably become disconnected within about a minute.

I've only seen (and also experienced) the "made a call or played a card" problem a small number of times (and not recently). It has happened - sufficiently infrequently that I have never reported it. When I've seen people I play against "woken up" by a message, the response has usually been "Sorry: was chatting" or "Whoops, missed it was my turn".

As I remember the default setting for 'who's turn' is very light blue. Only a small difference to the other players.

I have changed my personal settings so that 'who's turn' by me now is RED, meaning a big difference.

If I am right - this might be a reason for unintended delay by many players which I also often have noticed.

To speed up a bit I think it also might be helpful to change the default setting to 'autoplay of singletons'.

Quoting Claus

"To speed up a bit I think it also might be helpful to change the default setting to 'autoplay of singletons'. "

Of course Claus the only problem with this is that when a recognisably slow player plays a card 'out of tempo' , ie fast, the chances are it is a singleton...for this reason i have noticed many people change it back if they had set it to autoplay:)

Of course it might encourage people to play a bit quicker if they knew beforehand that when they reduce to a singleton it will be shot onto the table faster than they could say "i meant to play the Queen of " (hee hee)...

It does frustrate me a bit when you know a person has a singleton - from bidding especially - and you suspect s/he is delaying because you potentially have a guess to make in the suit (or s/he thinks you have)...

in these situations it is best to use humor (or sarcasm as a friend of mine told me describes what i say better :P ....) i just say

"Which half of your singleton do you wish to play first, my friend?"

You find, ordinarily, that they dont know how to respond so just play their card :D ...or as i found out the other day discard from another suit (lol she opened a multi with a 7 card suit, hee hee)...or just swear at you in a foreign language...

No problem - they may do so. Watching as dummy I think you will agree it sometimes looks incredible how much time people uses just to play their singletons. Partner and opps. - no difference. Just to hit the right spot to click - no thinking.

But this autoplay will help speeding up for those who are unconcentrated. They of course need to have the connection still - no red dot.
