Time penalty

Recommended Posts

Friday night, May 30, 8pm est.

Two board rounds, mps. We play the first hand against a pair, partner declares, rho makes an odd opening lead, defense does not go well.

It turns out that the opening leader is a sub, and now the non-sub opponent does not bid the next hand, waiting for his regular partner to get back. This takes a good deal of time, maybe 7 minutes, and when the hand starts we have time to bid it and see the dummy (I declare) and then we are transported to the next table for the next round. We get ave minus (40%)

While waiting for lho I sent approximately three messages to the director explaining that the time problem is completely due to my lho not bidding his hand. A couple of rounds later I sent another message explaining again.

No adjustment. In fact no reply. To any of my messages.

I have to say that this isn't right. I know ACBL online is not the Spingold. Still, this isn't right. Preference: Opponent is told to play the hand with the sub or beat it. We all have these connection problems from time to time and we live with them. Second choice: Ave plus. Third choice (still acceptable): Ave. But ave minus??

It sounds to me as if the director should have awarded your side an average plus and the opposing side an average minus. OR, at the least, give your side an average. You should not have been penalized.

I realise that this is not difinitive but maybe the best we have.....

Quote "If the board result can not be determined, and one side is determined to be at fault for the unfinished board, a score of ave+ should be awarded to the pair not at fault, and ave- should be awarded to the pair at fault. "Fault" does not imply that a side did anything dishonest or bad. It just means that the side contributed to most of the delay that caused the board to be unfinished. The delay may be due to a player requesting the director to wait extra time for his/her partner to return (many players would rather have an ave- for a board or two if it allows a friend to return and finish the tournament)."

The non-sub oppo should not be booted, he/she has decided to await his original partner, and should expect to recieve Ave-

p.s. Bombarding the TD with messages is not polite, he is much less likely to respect your complaint, sorry but TD's are human too
