Respond to negative double

Recommended Posts

PASS! Double doesn't show diamonds, this is not 1983. Double shows 4 spades (or sometimes more with a weaker hand) and that's it, so 4 would show extra values that this hand isn't even close to having.

Over partner's next double you can bid 4.

I'll try 4. Responder promises neither diamonds nor clubs, but why wouldn't we show our 6 bagger?

Because playing a 6-1 fit in a crappy suit on the 4 level with hardly more than half the deck is bad for your score?

Easy pass 1st round - partner's still in the auction and we don't have anything great to say about our hand (Dbl is negative, so it shows <GF w/4+spades or GF with 4S) After partner's 2nd double? I'll go with 4D

What should double by you show. Not suggesting that I would do it (I would pass), but on a theoretical basis, what should it be?

a) take-out, usually 3 spades and extra values, short in hearts

B) Penalty

c) Optional, e.g. likely flat 18 count or so.

Pass is usually some balanced 12-14 hand. Mine is WAY different than that, and I don't think pard will necessarily reopen this if I do pass.

I gotta bid now, and 4, albeit a slight overbid, seems to be the most descriptive call.

That's not true, it's usually a minimum but no reason that it's usually balanced, at least not by any more than you hold balanced hands vs unbalanced hands. You just invented that part out of thin air B) So since we are minimum....

Yeah, but it will really help your hopeless contract dummy technique.

This hand is not a minimum, and you could easily defend 3H while cold for game if you pass. That said, you could just get too high by bidding 4C. I am not sure what I would do.

Partner may very well guess that we have 2-1-4-6 pattern if we pass. He will get fairly close to that. That makes me want to pass. He will get it right.

To explain. He will look at his heart length and assume we have a stiff. He will be pessimistic about spades and will assume a doubleton. Why no bid by us, then? 4-6 in minors. Stuff like that. He will just read this right. When I have the hand I would exp[ect partner to guess that I have, I probably do not need to be aggressive and can shoot low.

This is unreadable for me. If you wish me to comment, please rewrite it.
