Apollo81
What do you think the expected hands are for E and W in this auction, in terms of both suit lengths and high cards? 5NT at any point would have been pick a slam. N E S W(1♠)-p-(2♠)-Dbl(p)-5♦-(p)-5♥(p)-6♦
Halo
I guess: QJTxx-KQJxxxxx- is an extreme possibility.

NickRW
Its quite hard envisioning something for East that has enough strength/distribution to justify the leap to 5♦ which did not want to bid over 1♠. What about this as a guess: [hv=n=skj973hkq42d6ckt8&w=s2ha763dakj7ca764&e=sat65h5dqt95432c3&s=sq84hjt98d8cqj952]399|300|[/hv] Not sure I believe what I've written though! Echognome
[hv=w=sxhakqxxxxdajxcax&e=sxxxxhxdkqxxxxxcx]266|100|I have no confidence in this.[/hv]This seems more likely to me to be consistent with the 5♥ call. I guess some 8-baggers in diamonds with a horrid suit might also qualify. How about: xxx --- Q98xxxxx xx
neilkaz
[hv=w=sxhakqxxxxdajxcax&e=sxxxxhxdkqxxxxxcx]266|100|I have no confidence in this.[/hv] This seems reasonable. Perhaps 5♥ is a tad weaker ? Perhaps the D suit is a ragged 8 carder where an initial PJO to 3♦ wasn't given ? With the given hand I'd have kicked 5♦ to 6♦ but perhaps there's less support or perhaps 5♥ was intended as a Q looking for a grand
kenrexford
I think 6♦ is asking for Kings. :(
gnasher
All the suggestions so far look like routine 3♦/4♦ overcalls to me. The most likely explanation for East's pass followed by 5♦ is that he has long, bad diamonds with outside defensive strength. Something like xxx A 10xxxxxx KQ, on which you might choose not to bid over 1♠, but which improved considerably after the raise to 2♠ and the takeout double. The rest of the auction is harder to explain. By far the most likely explanation is that a misunderstanding has occurred, or at least that someone is trying to cater for one - even Frances won't have discussed this sequence. If that possibility is ruled out, then either: - 5♥ is a cue bid, and East has signed off in 6♦ because he doesn't have a black-suit ace, or - 5♥ is natural, showing a strong one-suiter. To double 2♠ rather than bidding hearts you have to be very strong, so I suppose this must be forcing. 6♦ as an offer to play is just about possible - Axx void 10xxxxxx Kxx, perhaps.
