      10
    • Only second hand
      4
    • Both hands
      9
    • I found a bid different from pass or double.

The second one is a very easy pass. I think the first one is tough, I don't know what's right but I lean towards a pass at those colors. Doubling might be right though, it really depends a lot on the other players tendencies.

I'd never dream about doubling the 2nd hand - clear pass IMO.

On the first I might dream about doubling, but I'd pass that one too.

ditto

On the 1st one, while we have the shape to double, consider the dilemma we pose for partner on many hands... we are forcing to the 4 level or about to get his lead against 3 doubled, when he doesnt' need a lot to pass... it may appear to him to be the percentage action out of various ugly actions. He isn't bidding 3N on any hand where 3N is favourite.. he'd be playing us for this type of hand already and would have bid 3N over 3. He may bid 3N after we announce extra values by reopening, but that is when we rate to be going down...

BTW, while some players proclaim that vulnerability is for children, most players have learned to have a GOOD hand when they preempt red v white.

On the 2nd, we may miss game.. can't bid them all, and trying to do so is a ticket to oblivion.

The 2nd is a very easy pass. It is a complete picture gallery. Walter the Walrus might love it (19 points? How can I go for 800?) but I don't.

The 2nd is closer but I like double. LHO rates to have a pure hand and RHO passed. Would it surprise you to see some cards over there? Would it surprise you to see 5 or 6 clubs or diamonds? Frankly I think pass is a little lazy.

Edited : Im on my PDA so I cant tell for sure the vulnerability. I think we are w/r. If we are r/w I pass too.

Pass by me for both.

IFor the first hand, if partner could not bid over 3, it's quite doubtful you can make anything. The gain for X seems to be when partner can pass for penalties, but with most such hands where they can be doubled for more than one off partner could have bid 3NT anyway.

Hand one I double. I don't like it, but partner could also see the vulnerability and be making a play for 800 instead of 430. I don't want to break partnership trust by not doubling with shortness in this auction. I may be influenced by the fact that in my most advanced partnership, we have agreed to act aggressively with shortness in situations where partner could have penalty-passed.

Hand 2: Pass. If partner can't act over 1 spade, in an auction where I "know" he has shortness, then I don't have a hand good enough to force to the 4 level. My most likely plus is defending 3 spades.
