Mirages and Blind Spots

Recommended Posts

Two situations discussed with a friend reminded me of how elusive this game can be.

The first:

You have x Jxx K10xxx Jxx. RHO opens 1NT (15-17), Stayman, 2, 4. You lead the stiff.

Dummy hits with Kx Kxxx Qxx K10xx. Partner wins the spade Queen, Declarer following small. Partner plays the spade Ace, declarer again playing small. What card you you play to send partner the right message?

The second was an easy mistake. The interesting way to put it is to give dummy and declarer in one suit. Notrump contract. Dummy has Qxxx. First, imagine that Declarer has A9xx. When is it good for Declarer to lead small off dummy and insert the 9? Now, switch to AJ109 in hand. Any strange situation calling for a possible small to the Ace at BAM, other than smelling a rabbit?

These situations catch me a lot at the table, at least early in the tournament. Give me three or four days to get warmed up, and sure. But, rust takes a while to wear away, it seems.
