How can they make game with 20 HCP!!!111!!!

Quite easily if the fit is right. Slams can be made on 23 or so, grands on 27 with all the right controls. Admitedly this may not be a case of a good fit...

You can make a grand in a suit on a combined 5HCP.

Sample hand for the sole purpose of increasing my post count....

AQJ9xxx

---

x

AJTxx

One spade, rebid 3, rebid 4 spades. 7-5 isn't shocking, neither is the 13th card being in the unbid suit. This is about what I'd expect if my partner made those bids.

If the other opponent has the ace of diamonds, they make 5 (or sometimes 6).

If your partner has the ace of diamonds, it's down 1.

Before you think this is a 50-50 shot, consider...

1) If RHO doesn't have the ace of diamonds, he bid 2-over-1 with 4 hcp.

2) If they go down 1, the difference between doubled and undoubled is 50 points.

If they make 5, the difference between doubled and undoubled is 220 points.

Still feel like doubling?

Why would I double this ? Look at the opp bidding. Can I expect more than a J in PD's hand ? I suspect opener is 7-5 in the blacks. OK it's likely that the bidder doesn't have his bid, but so what ? Unless the opps are total clowns, I can't see doubling here.

Exactly.

People need to remember that when the opps freely bid game (ie not a save), they know what they have. When you X them you are saying "I have something surprising that you could not have known about, and because of that you're going down." If you don't have that something surprising don't X, they know when they are deficient in HCP and they don't care. On this hand you have the worst spade holding ever and only 1 ace. There is nothing surprising except that the hand lays well for them.

It may be because it's 1:00AM, but I would have bid 5 with the North hand without even thinking about it. Partner bid 4 diamonds on his own without any encouragement, I have four trumps to an honor. Good enough for me.

Especially all white in IMPs. Ooooh, we lost two IMPs for going down 3 doubled. Scary.

Balanced two-count.

Lose 2 is not the worst thing that can happen. Every once in awhile, my opponents do not make the contracts they bid.

If my partner has an actual X-then 4 call, and I have 4 diamonds, I don't think they're going down.

I don't understand this. Partner has such a good hand that you think they are making?
