How much is enough?

Recommended Posts

I like a NT response after partners t/o dble to be a reasonable hand good 7 to soft 11. So to me the requirments for the other suits are not strong indications that I can bid NT. If partner holds a t/o dble I expect them to be short of D and have support for the other suits, therefore the NT response is constructive.

I'm not suggesting the queen of some suit is more important than the queen of another suit. Just interested in what you think is the minimum hand to make a 1NT response.

e.g.

xx xxx KQJxx xxx

Is this enough?

Seems to me you are scrambling for a reason to bid NT and the xx xxx KQJxx xxx does not make it for me. Just imagine if partner holds a 4-4-1-4 10 HCP t/o dble which is completely normal and possible. If that is the case NT will not fare well at all. These D cards are perhaps worthless opposite a stiff D for playing NT.

While we may not always be pleased to be on the spot bidding some 3 bagger, at least at the one level we have a shot to survive. It is not our fault we have this hand, we only need to TELL partner as best we can what we hold, which is not much, so this hand would be 1H for me.

The problem I would like to avoid is hearing partner raise my 1NT bid to 2 (about 14) or even worse they blast 3 with a 17 count and I am endplayed on the dummy forever.
