CSGibson
[hv=d=w&v=n&s=saqj84hak873dtcj4]133|100|Scoring: IMP3♣-3♠,4♣-4♥,4♠-?,[/hv] No opponents bidding. Partner would raise spades initially with 3 small or 2 to an honor (including the T).
gnasher
I'd have passed 3♣, but maybe I expect less from 3♣ than you do. From where we are now, 5♣ looks obvious. Who wants to play 4♠ opposite xx xx xx KQ10xxxx?
the hog
Agree with Gnasher.
effervesce
Are you NS or EW? If partner was unfav vul bidding a direct 5♣ after the 3♣ preempt looks normal to me. At fav vul I'd pass.
han
I also like 5C now, expect to go down fewer than in 4S.

Who wants to play 4♠ opposite xx xx xx KQ10xxxx? 5♣ hoping the ♠K is onside or perhaps a pitch on the ♥ helps or that perhaps (and with some defensive help or luck, I can contribute a ♦ ruff). I don't expect PD to make, but do think it has better chances than playing 4♠ opposite xx, when if PD has xx in ♥ I may not even be able to get into his hand. inquiry
I also like 5C now, expect to go down fewer than in 4S. 5♣ should be no worse than 50-50 to make. Parnter opened 3♣ vul versus non-vul in second seat. I assume his clubs are not solid (since no 3NT opening), and we will lose the ♦A, but surely he has at most one club loser opposite Jx at this vul. He will not lose a heart, and if spade finesse is on, he is likely to take 6C, 2H, 3S. Even 6♣ is possible if the spade hook is on. I mean, how weak can this 3♣ bid be under this condition? gnasher
Partner opened 3♣ at favourable. " Dealer: West ... Vul: N/S"
inquiry
Partner opened 3♣ at favourable. " Dealer: West ... Vul: N/S" ok.. but typically forum members tend to show a hand as "south" ... this makes these things easier to read. Occassionally, when not south, they will say something like partner dealt and opened 3♣.. .to clarify the position of the hand. Or as "West you hold"... Or give the full auction (with passes by opponents). In this problem, you said who dealer and who vul, but your comment about the opponents were they did not bid. So I assumed the hand shown was south. Under corrected conditions, I still bid 5♣ but now with a lot less belief it will make.

CSGibson
Partner opened 3♣ at favourable. " Dealer: West ... Vul: N/S" Sorry, should have made it clear. Partner was a 2nd seat preempt, you are sitting South. You are vul, opps are not.
han
Ah, then I bid 5C.

benlessard
What i like to play is from Romex. 3C---3D is asking for a 3 card Major. So that 3C---3M show at least a 6 cards suit. On that hand ill bid 3D if partner bid 3Nt ill bid 4S showing a good 5card ♠ suit with tolerance for clubs.

(not the follow up, but that 3 diamonds asks for a 3 card major)
