Now who is going to win it?

ITALY?

Angelini - Bocchi - Duboin - Lauria - Sementa - Versace

What the... Benching the best pair :(

Maybe... NORWAY

Aa - Brogeland - Helgemo - Lindqvist - Lund - Molberg

Quite some new combinations here, still good luck NPC Harald :)

Also a great chance for junior Espen Lindqvist!

how about... SWEDEN

Bertheau - Cullin - Nilsson - Nystrom - Upmark - Wrang

Good luck to our regular poster Ulven!

I am of course rooting for... NETHERLANDS

Bakkeren - Bertens - Brink - Drijver - Muller - de Wijs or Ramondt - Westra

EDIT: Eurobridge claims Muller - de Wijs play, Bridge.NL claims it's Ramondt - Westra so I am leaning towards believing the Dutch site.

after all Brink & Drijver are playing again and after Silver in the Olympiad and Bronze in Bermuda Bowl the they are missing only one medal, the golden one...

but some sources say one favorite team could be... RUSSIA if they have Balicki - Zmudzinski in their ranks.

I am more than a bit confused

How does the right to represent a team get determined?

1. Citizenship

2. Country of residence

3. Country of birth

I was under the impression that Lindqvist was Swedish. However, I could be wrong. (At the very least, I thought that there is at least one well known Swedish Lindqvist)

In a similar vein, Balicki - Zmudzinski on the Russian team. I seem to recall that they were toying with repesenting Spain at one point in time, so who knows what's permitted.

Wow thanks Gerben. I guess winning the BB wasnt enough for Norway - so they had to go mixing up their partnerships LOL. I'm sure they have their reasons - who am I to judge?

Where is Fantunes?

Gotta go with the Swedes and our homeboy Ulf :(

Most likely you are referring to Sweden's Magnus Lindkvist (note the difference in spelling). He retired from the international stage about 5 years ago. Magnus' regular partners were, first, Björn Fallenius, later Peter Fredin.

There was another famous Swede with the surname Lindqvist (spelt the same way as the Norwegian's for this event). His name is Jörgen Lindqvist, European Champion in 1977, Denmark, but he died from cancer 8-10 years ago.

Espen Lindqvist is indeed Norwegian and has always been.

Hi all,

M.T. Lavazza gives a very diplomatic and PC answer in:

http://www.federbridge.it/BDIonline/indice.asp?news=944

but anyone who has watched F-N over the year before, and during, the BBowl has seen several basic errors that didn't happen in their 2005 campaign. As Lavazza says, the results of Shanghai had something to do with the change.

Thanks,

Dan

BONA FIDE RESIDENCE REQUIREMENTS

Players, who are not citizens of the country they wish to represent in international bridge championships, may be allowed to rely on the Bona Fide Residence Requirement if they are able to satisfy the sponsoring organisation of the legitimacy of their residence.

The proviso is incorporated within the sponsoring organisation’s conditions of participation to facilitate the opportunity for those players who have relocated to a country, that is not the country of their birth and, who genuinely and continuously reside in the country that they now wish to represent.

Bona Fide Residence is one's actual or true residence, maintained in good faith, and does not include a temporary residence or superficial residence established for convenience or for the purpose of circumventing the conditions of representative participation.

It is for the player who seeks to rely upon this requirement to satisfy the European Bridge League and demonstrate the genuineness of their residence. It is not to allow the transfer of a player’s allegiance for any reason other than their genuine relocation to a country that is not the country of their birth. Those players who are unable to demonstrate to the absolute satisfaction of the EBL’s Credentials Committee will not be allowed to represent the chosen country in international championships.

The following criteria will apply for those players seeking reliance upon the Bona Fide Residency Requirement:

- 1. The player must establish bona fide residence in the country that they seek to represent for at least two years prior to the start of the year within which they wish to participate; and

- 2. The player must have a visa or permit that allows them to remain in that country for a period of at least one year; or

- 3. The laws of that country allow the player to remain in that country for a period of at least one year.

Residence may be established and supported by the production documents from at least three of the following categories:

Voter’s registration

Driver's licence

Local or national tax records

Homeowner or tenant records

Medical records

Utility bills (gas, electric, water, telephone, mobile phone, waste disposal)

Financial records (loan, credit, investments, etc)

Welfare records

Vehicle records

Such other documents that may demostrate residence.

In addition, players who seek to rely upon the Bona Fide Residence Requirement must submit a written application that contains the following information:

Details of their previous country of residence and the date on which they relocated to the present residence.

If they represented their previous country in any international championships, the dates and detail of any such representation.

A signed statement that they are a Bona Fide Resident of the country which they now seek to represent.

If the Credential’s Committee is not satisfied with the documents submitted it may require further proof and/or information.

A player who has represented a country two or more times during the previous five years shall continue to be treated as being eligible to represent that country.

Players should be fully aware that by competing for a country other than that of their nationality (i.e. for which they hold or are entitled to hold a passport), they may jeopardise their eligibility to participate in a subsequent Olympic Bridge Event or Olympic Qualifier.

Approved by the EBL Executive Committee, Wroclaw, Poland, November 2007

None as serious as the errors Angelini has made several times when he has been playing on BBO vugraph.

This is bridge politics, guys. In this respect, Ms. Lavazza is not only the team sponsor; she is also a politician. Bridge politicians from Italy are not exactly people I would elect to have on my committee, but the Italians decide in Italy. Simple as that.

As an aside, BBO will likely be broadcasting from 12-16 tables three times a day for two weeks. The FFB has requested 20 vugraph accounts!

Too much to choose from? Perhaps, but if we did not offer options, we would also get complaints.

As for the Norwegian line-up:

Brogeland - Sælensminde ended their partnership late January.

Grøtheim - Tundal couldn't play both in Pau and Beijing, and chose the latter.

Helness was unavailable for Pau.

So we have these partnerships:

Boye Brogeland - Espen Lindqvist

Geir Helgemo - Børre Lund

Jørgen Molberg - Terje Aa

Brogeland-Lindqvist is a new combination.

Helgemo-Lund has played together occasionally over the years. They play togehter in the team series in Trondheim.

Molberg-Aa has played professionally in the US the last 2-3 years.

Helgemo-Lund, Molberg-Aa toghether with Per Erik Austberg won the Norwegian Clubs Team Championship last week.

Molberg played in our junior team in the early 90s, and won a silver medal in the JWT in Århus in 1993. Lindqvist has been part of our anchor junior pair for the last four years.

Lindqvist, Lund and Molberg make their debut in our open team in Pau.

The teams main goal in Pau is to qualify for the 2009 BB. If the whole team plays well, they'll have higher asprations.

Are Molberg - Aa playing Viking Club?

Some things from the interview:

MTL had the impression in Shanghai the players thiht their team was invincible, and didn't like that. So she started to think some changes were needed.

Bocchi-Duboin decided to split, she asked them to play one last time.

Sementa was in, she didn't even considered asking Lauria-Versace to step down.

Fantunes will be back.

She has great expectations for this team.

Not at all!

They play a completely natural system.

(14)15-17 NT

5443 (1=44M/5+)

Constructive W2M (6c 8-11)

2 is a weak 2 R/W, else garbage Multi

I was told that this issue will be decided next week.

Robert

OK, I see.

I have been wondering. The line-up deadline was 15th of April and the deadline for submission of systems today.

EBL has been threatening us very harshly with an automatic penalty for any delays with the systems: the partnership would have would have to play a WBF standard system for at least 2 days.

Also a 200 SFR fine is automatic, and brownstickers and other conventions might be forbidden for the pair for the entire event.

Hmmm. Laissez faire or robot-like discipline, which one applies?

I think that Italy is a huge favourite - as usual. But where is Denmark on your list, Gerben? B)

I took a look at the official tournament site, team Russia has been already registered, but not submitted until now, the line up is not published.

North of Germany of course. You ask a silly question, you get a silly answer :)

Since I am half Swedish, I am also going to root for Ulf. However, my native home is Denmark, so Michael Askgaard (MFA) and his team-mates will get a larger percentage of my support.

I expect both teams to advance to the second stage of the round-robin. The format is brand new this time. Read here ...
