I think there's no definite agreement on what is standard?

 

But with a BBO pickup, I'll expect both 2C and 2H is to play. And what 2D is depends on my mood.

 

I prefer 2C = to play, 2D = transfer, 2H = NGF Stayman, 2S = GF Stayman. Just my thoughts :)

If you play transfers here, transfers are still on even into their suit. But you would have to...agree transfers!

In SAYC, transfers are off (while Stayman on) on our 1NT overcall, so 2♥ is certainly to play.

 

I suppose 2♦ would be to play also although

2♣ = to play

2♦ = cuebid

is better.

I think standard is 2♥ is to play and 1NT was strong. I think 1NT as sandwich would be common with some folks, but not standard. If 1NT is strong then full systems are common but not standard. One of my partners in a partnership where full systems are on over 1NT overcalls suggested transferring into their suit shows a NT-ish hand with concern about their suit for playing in NT.

There were no agreements.

I wasnt even sure if the NT was natural (it was) or a 2 suited takeout which some use.

I realized he must have thought it was a transfer, but would I not raise his NT with additional strangth and stoppers? I was afraid to bid 3♥ but maybe I should have.

 

In general I don't think its a useful bid to be able to transfer into their major suit, where they are guaranteeing 5+.

But they don't guarantee 5+, only 4+.

If this means, that there have to be more efficient methods

out there, some were already mentioned, you are right.

 

But playing system on, keeps the memory load low,

and it wont matter with method you are playing, at

least most of the time.

You can use it for other purposes, such as to show or deny stoppers in the bid suit. Also, if you normally use 1NT-2♣-2♦-2NT to invite in NT (using something else for 1NT-2NT), you can use the transfer instead, and therefore keep the opponents from knowing if your partner has 4 cards in the other major.

 

I suppose technically it's a relay to the opponent's suit, not a transfer (since you aren't promising length in the suit).
