Any way to "balance" the hands?

Recommended Posts

Nobody likes playing in a tournament where you never pick up a single decent hand.

Unfortunately I've had far too many of those on BBO.

Given that it's a program, I'm sure it is possible to calculate who has held what so far and somehow balance things to make it fairer, and far more enjoyable for ALL to play in.

Why would you want to make bridge fair? I think that as long as the deals are random then its all good. You could go into your local club and have to defend all the hands so why should it be any different on BBO, also if you are rotating directions in tournaments then you could just be missing all the nice ones. Bide your time and wait your turn, you will get to play some eventually.

This idea is BADLY flawed

Suppose that its the last board of a tournament.

You "know" that partner has been dealt crappy hands throughout the night.

Ergo, you now know that partner is going to be dealt an above average hand.

Wait long enough and it will all average out.

hi,

and then we tds gets demands for adjust because a partnership calculated she came 2 points short of avarage because not"fair". the only problem i ever had was tourney with predealt hands and straight mitchell movement the td obvuisly didnt knew and all points went to one side. i told td that, he was under the impresiion it was random movement:);):):):):):):)

1. It doesn't need to be an exact average.

2. In an individual tourney you don't know what partner has held. In a pairs tourney, it could be the partnership that gets "balanced".

3. Can be done throughout the tourney.

Seems easy enough - as you sit at the table the program calculates who has had the worst deal and if anyone is way below par, rotates the board accordingly.

Regardless of how you implement this, you are still going to provide an extra edge to players who are willing to track hand strength over time. [Please note: this isn't that difficult to do. Anyone who plays "serious" Blackjack will easily be able to keep a running tab regarding hand strength]

Your proposal

(A) Requires the server to preserve extra "state" for each player: Adding complexity is never a good thing.

(;) Provides a whole new way of cheating

© Really doesnt accomplish very much. I've certainly seen "hot" and or "cold" streaks in my life. However, most players who notice a streak are actually suffering from selective memory.

Hi EarlPurple!

------

You can do that by pre selected deals with enough rounds to play most of them. This is the reason why my favourite tournaments are "Test your skills".
