Guest Jlall
This one comes from overtime of a knockout match: Axx AQTxxx --- Kxxx red/red... 1S on your right, you bid 2H, 3H on left, X by pard, 4S on right. What do you do? No agreements on the double but partner is a modern expert.

kenrexford
Double and lead a small heart. I thought of similar, but double and lead the heart 10 if opting defense.
pclayton
Double and lead a small heart. Agree with double, but I don't agree with the lead. I don't think pard guarantees a heart honor on this bidding, just a desire to compete. Obviously if pard pulls to 5♥, I will be happy. While 5♥ may be a winner with pard's spade shortage, he might have two spades, and he didn't bid 4♥ over 3♥. Hoping for a stiff spade, 4 hearts and enough of a hand to make 5♥is probably a dream. I think 2=4 or 1=3 in the majors is more realistic. I'm leading a small club.

P_Marlowe
5H. I am not 100% convinced, but assuming3H showed a inv.+ and a fit, I would takeX as a double, which showed some hearthonors and values. If I dont bid 5H, I would pass. With kind regardsMarlowe
gnasher
5♥. Partner's double showed a raise to 3♥. It doesn't promise a high heart, and it doesn't deny a singleton spade. I don't need much to make 5♥ - x Kxx xxxxx Qxxx or x Jxx xxxxx QJxx would be sufficient. 4♠ may or may not go down, depending on where partner's honours are. I can't see why people are so confident of beating it by leading a low heart - even if it goes to plan, so far that's only a heart, a diamond ruff and ♠A. Apollo81
what is the standard meaning of partner's double? ♥K? does it promise any specific length? anyway i guess i would try 5♥
brianshark
Justin has often, on these forums, said how it's best to avoid any situation where there could be a double game swing. That, and the fact that in a recent teams competition, I was partly responsible for 2 seperate double game swings means that I'm going to bid 5♥ here. Twice burned, thrice shy. TimG
If you're going to bid to 5H, how good do your clubs have to be in order for you to bid them along the way?
gnasher
If you're going to bid to 5H, how good do your clubs have to be in order for you to bid them along the way? Much better than this. I don't think I want partner to bid 6♥ over 5♠.

Glad someone listens lol. And you summed up my thoughts exactly, this could easily be a double gamer I don't really understand all the enthusiasm for defending here. Like gnasher pointed out even IF parnter has the HK, and IF we get the elusive diamond ruff we're only up to 3. And a lot of things coulda gone wrong by then. Meanwhile we don't really need much for 5H to be a good spot. I hate doubling in these spots. If you're going to bid to 5H, how good do your clubs have to be in order for you to bid them along the way? Yes, I thought it was a question of 5H or 5C. I really like this question. 5♥. Partner's double showed a raise to 3♥. It doesn't promise a high heart, and it doesn't deny a singleton spade. And this echos my feelings exactly about what the X should mean (no idea if it's standard or not, but a hand like 8 points and 3/4 hearts needs a bid imo). Guest Jlall
At the table my partner bid 5H, p p 5S and then Xed. We got 500. At the other table Pepsi chose to bid 5C. Now it went p p 5S X p 6C X p p p and it was cold. Partner had x KJ xxx QJTxxxx. BTW we could get another trick double dummy, but my diamonds were 542. When I won the HK, I led back the D5. This was an unreadable spot when my partner never imagined I would have only 3 diamonds so he played the HA.
Halo
Different view of the world for me. When partner doubles, he says oppos may be having a bit of a game. So I definitely respond with a double of 4S with my excellent defence. If partner has something else in mind, he can bid on.
