More on filters

Recommended Posts

An individual may have several properties, ie "friendliness", "country".

A table may have other properties, ie "number of empty seats".

When filtering on a combination of properties you get a different result depending on whether the filters are related by (eg) "AND" v "OR" operators.

For example, when examining the players in lobby, I would get a different result by filtering for "English Friends" (ie England AND Friends) as opposed to "Friends OR England players".

It is not my area of expertise, but in other applications that address this issue you tend to get two filters; an "exclusion" or "Mask" filter, and an "inclusion" filter. By combining these you can I think get any combination that you want.

Adds to complexity, I grant, but an improvement?

In the previous versions you could sort tables. With the introduction of filters the sorting functionality has been removed, and I think for the worse. Having filtered out full tables I would still like to sort the remaining tables by number of empty seats. I would also like to be able to sort the lobby by country (as an alternative to additional filters if necessary). That way I could still identify "Friends OR English players" without complex filter options.

Currently if you filter on country in the main playing area you do not get a meaningful response, as it only displays tables that contain no players OTHER than those of the selected country. What if you want to display all tables where at least one player is in the selected country? The additional "mask" filter would be able to do that, I think. Or am I wrong?

Would someone else confirm this for me (that is, that if you select country in a bridge club, you only get tables where ALL the players are from that country)?

If this is true, then I have put an incorrect explanation in the new online help. I have to admit I made an assumption that I did not check out (sorry about that). I assumed you would see all tables where AT LEAST ONE OF THE PLAYERS is from that country.

hi John,

yes, I can confirm that if you country-filter tables all tables that have at least one player from a country not selected are not displayed. On the other hand, tables with all 4 seats empty are always displayed. e.g. if I filter for USA now I get only one table with 4 US players and 10 totally empty tables. It was implemented like this from the start. Of course it would make more sense if all tables where at least one player of any selected country is sitting would be included in the list.
