Superflight GNT Problem 1

CSGibson

Recommended Posts

We played today in our district's superflight semi-finals and qualified in 2nd place for a 4 team knockout finals. I'm posting some problem hands.

[hv=d=s&v=n&s=skqjt83h5d4cqt642]133|100|Scoring: IMP[/hv]

Preempt this? And if so, to what level? Edit: Or even open it at the 1 level?

Easy, really easy

1s if we open on junk

2s if we open super sound :)

In any case I would follow our system agreements :)

Great example to discuss with partner what an opening bid or opening preempt means.

I bet if you are superflight you had this in depth discussion :)

Best wishes Win!

Ty for the support, Mike.

Actually, this is a fairly new partnership, and I'm fairly certain that I was the only one in the room eligible to play flight C GNT, so there are a bunch of situations where we're going by instincts instead of discussion.

1 )If nothing else these forums have really forced in me...."discuss what an opening one bid or two bid looks like in all seats all vul" :) I mean this, really seems to be priority one. :)

2) discuss what a 2/1 bid means

3) discuss what rebid over 2/1 means....:)n(shape or strength)

I chose 3, but 4 would have worked also. Partner jumped to 6 on the following hand:

[hv=d=s&n=sa52hajdajt963ca3&s=skqjt83h5d4cqt642]133|200|3-6[/hv]

This came home after LHO led his singleton 9 of clubs to the ace and RHO, not unreasonably, popped king when a low club was led from the board at trick 2.

Don't we still need something good to happen in trumps.

That is only six spades, three aces, Q eventually ...

so we need two ruffs on the board. If LHO has 97x, 96x or 76x or better then we are still failing.

3 for me.

4 is possible, if perhaps a bit much.

Dislike pass, with all these spades and so much playing strength.

Dislike 1 with an 8 count and no defence.

Agreed

RHO exited a small trump. I played a diamond to the ace, ruffed a diamond, small club. If LHO ruffed, I was planning on overruffing and ruffing a diamond high, seeing if either diamonds split 3-3 or if a double squeeze would occur around the heart suit. I figure this line of play to be a heavy favorite to bring the contract home. As it is, LHO declined to ruff.

With spades 3=1 and diamonds 3-3, East could beat you by taking K and playing a heart. The same would apply whenever there was a double squeeze with hearts as the pivot. The knowledge that you had five clubs ought to make this play straightforward to find.

It seems to me that, if West's lead is likely to be a singleton, a better line is A, A, ruff (assume no one shows out), K, A. If spades are 2-2, you're home; if they're 3-1 you need diamonds 3-3.
