what is your bidding plan?

Torn between 4 and 5

Club suit is far too weak for any kind of fit jump...

I suspect that I'd bid 5. 4 is (essentially) a transfer to Spades and I won't be happy if 4 comes floating back to me

I am going to try to be a little sneaky and splinter in diamonds. I plan to bid 5 over 4, but I like this bid for two reasons. It doesn't give up on a slam that could easily be there. And if they play the hand they will get any spade guess wrong as they will never think I'm short.

I really like this!

I really don't understand the desire to make a preemptive 5 bid when your side should be looking for slam. I think JDonn had it right when splintering 4; at least that gets the slam potential across to partner, and when they compete to 4 spades, partner should have a better idea of our hand (short in both spades and diamonds = long in hearts & clubs).

I am going to make a constructive heart raise.

We have the choice of splinter in spades or diamonds - system ON over a double. Otherwise whatever is in your system. A fit jump in clubs seems ok to me if that is in your system.

I like jdonn's reasons for a diamond splinter.

4H. Now everyone is guessing, including us - at least I know we have 10 trumps or more.

The opponents meanwhile, may make anywhere from 3 to 7 spades - I'll just sit back and see if they guess correctly. I'm one and done with this hand.

Random BBO cross-IMPs.

Dealer: North
Vul: E/W
Scoring: XIMP
9

1-(Dbl)-?

What is your bidding plan?

I make the system splinter bid that shows a stiff spade and long hearts and game force hand but limited. With more I would bid whatever version of jacoby 2nt we play.

This problem generated a huge disparity of choices.

Spade splinter: 2

Diamond splinter: 4 (one bids 2NT if 4 is fitted)

4: 2

5: 2

Constructive heart raise: 1

2: 1

psyche something (probably spades): 2

The full hand:

[hv=d=n&v=e&n=saqjhqxxxxdaxxxcx&w=stxxxxhxdqjtxxckx&e=skxxxhxdkxxcajtxx&s=s9hakjtxxd9cq6xxx]399|300|Scoring: XIMP[/hv]

I bid 3 at the table. I considered 4 but I was concerned that splintering in diamonds would put partner under pressure to make a slam move with very weak trumps.

The rest of the auction was not good bridge:

1 - (Dbl) - 3! - (Dbl)

P - (P) - 4 - (4)

Dbl - (P) - 5

5 was strangely doubled by RHO, so we won some IMPs for +750. Two pairs bid the slam, but neither of their auctions was good:

1-(Dbl)-2-(P); 2-(p)-4NT-etc

1-(Dbl)-5-(P); 6-ap
