sceptic
does that not give up on a diamond slam ?
TimG
does that not give up on a diamond slam ? While 3NT does not show 5 diamonds, it doesn't end all auctions. I don't think there is a problem with downgrading slam prospects a bit with AKQ in the enemy suit - those honors aren't going to be useful in generating long suit tricks -- on this auction you'd rather have ♠Axx ♥KQx than ♠AKQ ♥QTx, wouldn't you? Winstonm
does that not give up on a diamond slam ? Yes. Unless partner wants to move over 3NT. Seriously, Wayne, why would you be concerned about missing slam with a soft-looking 5332 shape opposite a simple 1-bid opening? The hand may count to 15, but it's not much better than a decent 13 for playing strength. The time to think about slam is when you hold a slammish hand - that's the best way I know to put it - maybe that's why I am a lousy teacher. The differences are simply obvious to me, but not easily quantified without posting hand-after-hand of comparisons.

P_Marlowe
does that not give up on a diamond slam ? It does, but AKQ in their suit is not a good sign that slam is on, on what was 2S based on? Another question: What are your alternatives? If you played it, you could bid 3C as a transfer to diamonds showing support, intending to bid 3 NT over 3D.This sequence would show the diamond supportthe spade stopper and the bal. nature of your hand. I think given the bal. nature of the West handand the rock solid stopper in spades 3NT is clear. With kind regardsMarlowe PS: An additionnal aspect is, how solid does partnerusally open, is the given opening hand a dead min, or is it possible, that he could be weaker. gwnn
Ever since Winston started posting bridge again, there's been so much more understanding and friendliness here. I wonder...
Cascade
3NT. Actually in my regular partnership we play: 2NT either GF or 6-9 diamond raise 3♦ invitational diamond raise We also have 3♠ as a diamond raise without a spade stopper (usually 0-1 spades) So I would bid 2NT and then 3NT and partner would be able to move on suitable hands.
