han
All red, IMPs. JxJ109xxA9xx9x 2C- (2S) - pass* - (3S)pass - (pass) - ?? Your pass showed some values (double would show a bust). What would double by partner be? What do you do now?
h2osmom
Would double by partner have been takeout? And now, why wouldn't double be right?

nige1
All red, IMPs ♠ Jx ♥J109xx ♦A9xx ♣9x2♣ (2♠) _P (3♠)_P (_P) ??Your _P showed some values (_X would show a bust). What would _X by partner be?Presumably, you are in a GF context, so his _P was forcing and _X would have been penaltyWhat do you do now? Now, IMO 4♥ = 10, _P = 8 _X =

dburn
Passing it out gets 8??????????Passing it out may well get 11. Not all that long ago, the cool school in England thought (correctly) that it was a fabulous idea to play that after 2♣ - (overcall), pass showed values, because this made it more or less free to psyche a 2♣ opening. Value-showing passes after strong 1♣ and strong 2♣ openings, combined with takeout doubles from both sides, are almost the worst and most unmanageable "expert" convention to be foisted upon bridge-players everywhere (support doubles, except in the context of a strong club system, remain the worst). Still, we will be charitable and assume that Nigel may have misread the problem. It's easy to do. Maybe one day soon, when Fred and Uday aren't busy, we can have an auction template to go with the hand diagrams.

Thank you David  It probably does deserve 11  I'm sorry :) I mistakenly thought partner would have another shot :) Revised estimate 4♥ = 10 _X =
neilkaz
What does PD have that doesn't double 3♠ looking for a penalty at these colors and cannot bid over 3♠ ? My guess is that he has the low end of 22-24 HCP and a flat hand and xx or Qx in ♠ so, even knowing my pass promises some values, fears 3NT gets set on the lead and is not willing to X it since he's passing the buck to me. With that in mind, I'll try 4♥ and if the opps bid 4♠ then I double.
OleBerg
Easy 4♥ As you have showed values, you are in a game-force, so double by pertner would be penalty. (Rather warning you, not to bid on.) Partners pass is encouraging you to bid on. If he bids again, he haf planned to pull a double, and thus shows a very strong hand. Best Regards Ole Berg
