Not all that long ago, the cool school in England thought (correctly) that it was a fabulous idea to play that after 2♣ - (overcall), pass showed values, because this made it more or less free to psyche a 2♣ opening. Value-showing passes after strong 1♣ and strong 2♣ openings, combined with takeout doubles from both sides, are almost the worst and most unmanageable "expert" convention to be foisted upon bridge-players everywhere (support doubles, except in the context of a strong club system, remain the worst). Still, we will be charitable and assume that Nigel may have misread the problem. It's easy to do. neilkaz Posted April 5, 2008 Report Share Posted April 5, 2008 What does PD have that doesn't double 3♠ looking for a penalty at these colors and cannot bid over 3♠ ? My guess is that he has the low end of 22-24 HCP and a flat hand and xx or Qx in ♠ so, even knowing my pass promises some values, fears 3NT gets set on the lead and is not willing to X it since he's passing the buck to me. Partners pass is encouraging you to bid on. If he bids again, he haf planned to pull a double, and thus shows a very strong hand.
