Pickup partnership, without discussion. You see the auction:

2(1) - Pass - 2(2) - Pass

2(3) - Pass - Pass - Double

(1) Weak-only multi; weak two in either major

(2) Pass or correct

(3) Spades

What do you think about the double?

Some people defend the multi like this:

2 pass 2 dbl = take out of hearts

2 pass 2 pass + dbl of 2 = take out of spades

This is part of the meckwell defense to the multi. It might be what pard is thinking of.

Or, partner has no clue what we should be playing but is assuming that his partner has a brain.

Of course this is takeout with expected shortness in spades.

This was part of my experience playing with an "expert" pickup today. I was the doubler. My partner passed the double with xxx AJ QJxx QTxx. We were cold for nine tricks in clubs or ten tricks in diamonds. Opponents were cold for nine tricks in spades. B)

After the hand, partner explained that only a novice like me would double 2 with only the singleton king of spades.
