FWIW, IMO a decent "defense" to a Precision 2 opening includes a Herbert Negative here, even if you do not use a Herbert Negative anywhere else.

IF using that approach, I'd still bid 2, because of the fifth heart and well-placed stiff. It is weird that I have a well-placed stiff, as 2-X-P-? is unlikely to occur here. But, I'm looking at a stiff club nonetheless. It seems that partner may have a double-bid-own-suit hand, which I will fit, or a balanced monster hand, which I will fit as well.

Arguably, perhaps I should bid 2 in this approach, planning to raise any call or to transfer after 2NT to hearts. Interesting.

Only you Ken could find more than a sentence to say about one of the more obvious problems in forums history...

3 shows a better hand.

At least another ace and you are getting close.

I would think it would show the same hand as....

1 X P 3

Maybe a hair stronger, since the Xer may not have 4 card support.

I think a hair weaker since partner doubled on the two level, not the one level.

Even 3H after 1S-x-p has been a long-time "delicate" matter...

...seems like (depending upon pard, opps, vul, and form of scoring) it should be something like Axx AJxxx xx xxx...

...but in these days of total tricks laws, what would one do with a 4count such

as xxx QJTxxx JTx x

?

Could "only 2H" be right? 4H even NV seems way too bold. 3H seems sort of "just right".

Maybe 3x in these auctions should be "tactical" and allow for the weaker hands with longish trumps, not exactly preemptive, but then again:)

Finally someone knows what he is talking about. I know 3 is just right ;) . I just wanted to know how many would bid it. My partner didnt like the bid (we went -1 ). Only after score from other table came up (3 making) did he quieten down .

So you came to see what is right, or wait for 1 out of 64 people to agree with you (well "maybe" in his words) so you could finally justify what you already "know"?
